Thompson’s OB ultrasound unit works with the Maternal Fetal Medicine physicians (Perinatologists) at Strong Memorial Hospital. They have been reading ultrasounds and coming on site to Thompson for many years, however with the addition of the OB/GYN ultrasound suite at Canandaigua Medical Group (CMG) in March 2019, the Perinatologists are here more often, making the CMG site the area’s only high risk site.
Thompson has two high risk sonographers at the CMG site who offer:
- Dating and Viability Ultrasounds – Performed in the first trimester to ensure accurate dating, viability is performed on patients when there is a concern that the pregnancy may not be developing as it should.
- Level 1: Limited Ultrasound – Performed to answer specific questions
- Level 2: Basic Ultrasound – This ultrasound takes a deeper look at all fetal anatomy. We also perform a biometry check (measurements of the head, abdomen, femur and humerus). No crown to rump length is measured.
- Targeted – Targeted ultrasounds are performed on the days the Perinatologists are on site in order to take a closer look at something that may be out of the ordinary, where the Perinatologist may need to counsel the patient.
- Fetal Echo – These tests are done on patients with family history of heart defects and/or abnormal heart anatomy seen on a level two ultrasound. Again, these are performed on the days the Perinatologists are on site.
- First Trimester Screens – These screens are used to obtain a measurement of the Nuchal Translucency. This measurement, in addition to bloodwork, will give a patient their risk for genetic disorders such as Down Syndrome and Edwards Syndrome.
- Fetal Well Being – This biophysical profile assesses how the baby is doing when there is decreased movement, and is also performed on babies when there is concern for low weight/size.
- Sonohysterogram – This is a procedure performed by our Perinatologists to assess the lining of the uterus on patients with irregular bleeding.
Pelvic Ultrasounds:
Thompson’s ultrasound suite at CMG also offers pelvic ultrasounds. These exams are read by the radiologists at F.F. Thompson Hospital.
