Pandemic Can Overwhelm Those With Autism

Pandemic Can Overwhelm Those With AutismTHURSDAY, May 28, 2020 (HealthDay News) -- The coronavirus pandemic can be especially difficult for children and adults with autism and their families, experts say. Self-isolation and disruption of routine are tough for anyone, but may emotionally upend someone with an autism spectrum disorder, said Dr. Adrien Eshraghi, a professor and director of the University of Miami Hearing Research and Communication Disorders Laboratory. The challenges autism patients and their families might face during the COVID crisis, and what health care providers should know to ensure appropriate care, are outlined in a letter published recently in The Lancet Psychiatry journal. "The goal of this paper is to define the challenges these patients face in a pandemic like this, so physicians, caregivers and...

Could an Injected Electrode Control Your Pain Without Drugs?

Could an Injected Electrode Control Your Pain Without Drugs?THURSDAY, May 28, 2020 (HealthDay News) -- An injectable electrode could prove a better way to ease chronic nerve pain than opioid painkillers or bulky and expensive implants, animal research suggests. It's called an "injectrode." It appears easier and cheaper than spinal implants for debilitating back pain, and safer than long-term use of opioids like OxyContin (oxycodone), a recent paper suggests. A liquid silicone gel filled with small metal particles is injected around the nerve that's causing the pain, said researcher Kip Ludwig, a professor of biomedical engineering and neurological surgery at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. "It cures (hardens), and it becomes a conductible electrode" that surrounds the nerve, Ludwig said. Doctors then inject an outer sheath of...

100,000 Dead, 40 Million Unemployed: America Hits Grim Pandemic MilestonesTHURSDAY, May 28, 2020 (HealthDay News) -- As the U.S. coronavirus death toll passed 100,000 on Wednesday, there was more evidence of the collateral damage the virus has caused: New numbers released Thursday show the number of unemployed has now passed 40 million. The death toll is "a striking reminder of how dangerous this virus can be," Josh Michaud, associate director of global health policy with the Kaiser Family Foundation in Washington, told the Associated Press. COVID-19 is also a virus of opportunity: A jump in cases is being seen in nearly a dozen U.S. states, at least half of which reopened early, as the country's coronavirus case count passed 1.7 million on Thursday. Though the overall national trend has been staying steady or dropping, Alabama, Florida, Georgia, South...

'Silent' COVID-19 More Widespread Than Thought

27 May 2020
`Silent` COVID-19 More Widespread Than ThoughtWEDNESDAY, May 27, 2020 (HealthDay News) -- A new cruise ship study suggests that the number of people who are infected with the new coronavirus but have no symptoms may be much higher than believed. More than 80% of those who tested positive for the infection had no symptoms, according to the study published online May 27 in the journal Thorax. The findings could be important as lockdown restrictions begin to be eased, and they highlight the need for accurate data on how many people worldwide have been infected, journal joint editor-in-chief Alan Smyth said in a linked blog. The study focused on a ship with 128 passengers and 95 crew that left Argentina in mid-March for a planned 21-day cruise of the Antarctic. The voyage began after the World Health Organization (WHO) had declared...

VESIcare LS Approved for Neurogenic Detrusor OveractivityWEDNESDAY, May 27, 2020 (HealthDay News) -- VESIcare LS (solifenacin succinate) oral suspension is now approved to treat neurogenic detrusor overactivity (NDO) in children 2 years and older, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration announced Tuesday. VESIcare (solifenacin succinate) tablets were approved in 2004 to treat overactive bladder in patients 18 years and older. VESIcare LS is the first FDA-approved treatment for NDO in patients as young as 2 years and requires only once-daily dosing as opposed to the current standard treatment, which requires dosing up to three times a day, according to Christine P. Nguyen, M.D., acting director of the FDA Division of Urology, Obstetrics and Gynecology in the Office of Rare Diseases, Pediatrics, Urologic and Reproductive Medicine in the Center...

FDA Approves IV Artesunate for Severe Malaria

FDA Approves IV Artesunate for Severe MalariaWEDNESDAY, May 27, 2020 (HealthDay News) -- Intravenous (IV) artesunate received approval from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration to treat adults and children with severe malaria, the agency announced Tuesday. This approval marks the first for severe malaria since the marketing of quinine was discontinued in early 2019. Before the current approval, U.S. patients with severe malaria and those with uncomplicated malaria who were not able to take oral medications were treated with IV artesunate under an investigational new drug protocol through the FDA Expanded Access program. About 2,000 cases of malaria are diagnosed in the United States each year, and about 300 of those cases are severe, according to data from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The FDA notes...

As a Nation's Worth Grows, So Do Waistlines

27 May 2020
As a Nation`s Worth Grows, So Do WaistlinesWEDNESDAY, May 27, 2020 (HealthDay News) -- Fatter wallets lead to fatter people, according to a new study. Researchers examined the link between nations' wealth and their obesity rates. They discovered citizens get plumper as their country gets richer. "As most people currently live in low- and middle-income countries with rising incomes, our findings underscore the urgent need for effective policies to break -- or at least weaken -- the relationship between income growth and obesity," said study co-author Debabrata Talukdar. He's a professor of marketing at the University at Buffalo School of Management, in New York. His team analyzed 40 years of data from 147 countries. They found that a 1% increase in per capita income is associated with a 1.23% rise in obesity among men and a...

Pollen Fragments Linger After Rains, Leaving Allergy Sufferers Miserable

27 May 2020
Pollen Fragments Linger After Rains, Leaving Allergy Sufferers MiserableWEDNESDAY, May 27, 2020 (HealthDay News) -- Spring showers bring … pollen. That's the surprising discovery made by researchers when they measured tree pollen fragment concentrations during and after spring rains of varying intensity in Iowa City between April 17 and May 31, 2019. Rain fell on 28 days of the study period, which is prime tree pollen season. There were light rains, thunderstorms, and a severe storm that spawned a tornado. The researchers found that pollen fragments can hang in the air for as long as 11 hours after heavy rains, and can get deep into the lungs and worsen spring allergies. "Our results show that while pollen grains decrease substantially during rain, peak concentrations of submicron pollen fragments occur during rain events and then persist for several...
