California Governor Rejects Bill to Provide Free Condoms to High Schoolers

California Governor Rejects Bill to Provide Free Condoms to High SchoolersMONDAY, Oct. 9, 2023 (HealthDay News) -- A California bill would have made free condoms available for high schoolers, but it was vetoed Sunday by Gov. Gavin Newsom because of cost. California has a budget deficit of $30 billion, Newsom noted in his veto of Senate Bill 541. This bill, plus several other measures lawmakers passed, would have increased state budget costs by $19 billion.“This bill would create an unfunded mandate to public schools that should be considered in the annual budget process,” the Democratic governor wrote. If the bill had been allowed to go through, it would have required public schools with grades 9 through 12 to make condoms available and free for all students. Those with grades 7 through 12 would have been required to allow condoms to be available as part...

What Is Croup? Its Symptoms and Treatment

9 October 2023
What Is Croup? Its Symptoms and TreatmentCroup can be a scary thing for new parents to watch their babies struggle with, so here is a primer on what it is and how to best treat it.Croup is a common respiratory illness, characterized by a narrowing of the main airway (the trachea), just below the vocal cords. It can be caused by many different viruses, including influenza, COVID-19 and RSV. However, the most common virus to cause croup is parainfluenza. Because it is caused by viruses, croup is usually accompanied by symptoms such as fever, congestion or runny nose. Croup is caused by inflammation and swelling in the upper airway. As a result of this narrowing, patients can have symptoms such as stridor (a high-pitched noise when breathing in), a barky cough or a hoarse voice.Croup is most common in children aged 6 months to 3...

Running vs. Meds: Which Works Best to Beat Depression?

Running vs. Meds: Which Works Best to Beat Depression?MONDAY, Oct. 9, 2023 (HealthDay News) -- Exercise has been dubbed "nature's antidepressant" by doctors for years, and now a new study confirms the notion. The finding follows a four-month look at the impact that running had on anxiety and depression when compared to a common antidepressant.SSRIs (selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors) work by boosting levels of serotonin, a neurotransmitter that’s a key player when it comes to regulating mood, depression and anxiety. But among 140 depression patients, those who engaged in regular group running -- meaning two or three 45-minute runs each week -- actually saw their depression levels drop a bit more than those who took the popular SSRI medication escitalopram (Lexapro). And those who treated their depression with exercise reaped an added...

'Liquid Biopsy' Could Help Guide Lung Cancer Treatment

9 October 2023
`Liquid Biopsy` Could Help Guide Lung Cancer TreatmentMONDAY, Oct. 9, 2023 (HealthDay News) -- For a subset of patients with advanced lung cancer, radiation therapy can sometimes substantially extend their lives. Now a new study hints that a blood test could be used to identify the people most likely to benefit.Right now, there is no way to cure stage 4, or metastatic, lung cancer — where the disease has spread beyond the chest cavity. But there are systemic (body-wide) treatments, including drugs and immune-based therapies, that can control the disease and give people more time. There are also some patients with stage 4 cancer who are in something of an in-between stage, where their disease has spread, but to a relatively limited degree.Doctors call that "oligometastatic" lung cancer. And clinical trials have shown that many of those...

Woman Resistant to Alzheimer's Helps Inspire New Way to Fight the Disease

Woman Resistant to Alzheimer`s Helps Inspire New Way to Fight the DiseaseMONDAY, Oct. 9, 2023 (HealthDay News) -- Researchers have developed an antibody that can reduce Alzheimer's-like brain damage in lab mice — inspired by the case of one woman with remarkable resistance to the disease. The work, by researchers at Mass General Brigham, Harvard Medical School in Boston, and elsewhere, began a few years ago, with the case of a woman in Colombia who had shown "extreme protection" from Alzheimer's disease. She was from a family with an unusually high genetic risk of early-onset Alzheimer's disease, and her genes seemed to have her on a course toward developing the disease by her 40s. Despite that, she withstood dementia until her 70s.After her death, it was found that her brain harbored large amounts of abnormal amyloid — the protein that makes up the...

Want to Lower Your Odds for Long COVID? Get More SleepMONDAY, Oct. 9, 2023 (HealthDay News) – One way to help lower the odds for long COVID in people with pre-existing conditions may be to get more sleep.A new study discovered the risk was lower in those who slept six to nine hours a night compared to "short sleepers" who snoozed less.“Habitual short nighttime sleep duration exacerbated the risk of long COVID in individuals with pre-existing conditions,” said senior study author Dr. Frances Chung, chair of anesthesia, sleep and perioperative medicine research at Toronto's University Health Network. “Based on its proven adjuvant role in immunity, habitual sleep duration may alter the risk for developing long COVID.”The odds for long COVID were three times higher in people with pre-existing conditions who slept fewer than six...

A Wolf's Gut Bug Might Boost Health of Domestic Dogs

9 October 2023
A Wolf`s Gut Bug Might Boost Health of Domestic DogsMONDAY, Oct. 9, 2023 (HealthDay News) -- A type of gut bacteria found in wild wolves could help treat domestic dogs who have a common, debilitating gastrointestinal condition. New research in an Oregon wolf discovered a novel strain of Paenibacillus bacteria that displays the characteristics of a probiotic. The benefit from this bacteria would be to stop canine inflammatory bowel disease.A chronic illness, this disease causes vomiting, reduced appetite, weight loss, flatulence, a rumbling stomach and abdominal discomfort in domestic dogs, said researcher Bruce Seal, from Oregon State University-Cascades’ biology program.“At present there is no known cure for this ongoing dysbiosis [an imbalance of gut bacteria] of the gastrointestinal tract, and there are limited options for...
