Your Sex Affects Your Genes for Body Fat, Cancer, Birth Weight

Your Sex Affects Your Genes for Body Fat, Cancer, Birth WeightTUESDAY, Sept. 15, 2020 (HealthDay News) -- Researchers say your biological sex affects gene expression in nearly every type of tissue -- influencing body fat, cancer and birth weight. Gene expression is the amount of product created by a gene for cell function, the international team of researchers explained. They said their findings could prove important for personalized medicine, creating new drugs and predicting patient outcomes. "These discoveries suggest the importance of considering sex as a biological variable in human genetics and genomics studies," said project leader Barbara Stranger, an associate professor of pharmacology at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine in Chicago. The researchers analyzed 44 types of healthy human tissue from 838 people to find...

Many MS Patients Struggle With Finances, Forgo Treatments

Many MS Patients Struggle With Finances, Forgo TreatmentsTUESDAY, Sept. 15, 2020 (HealthDay News) -- More than three-quarters of Americans with multiple sclerosis (MS) experience financial difficulties that often prevent them from getting treatment, new research claims. "Our study results demonstrate the high prevalence of financial toxicity for MS patients and the resulting decisions patients make that impact their health care and lifestyle," said study author Dr. Gelareh Sadigh, an assistant radiology professor at Emory University School of Medicine in Atlanta. She and her colleagues surveyed 243 adult MS patients visiting neurology clinics and found that 56% reported declines in income after their MS diagnosis, and 37% had a decrease greater than 20%. More than one-third (35%) of the patients reported not sticking to their medication...

How Would Americans` Health Improve If All Cars Were Electric?TUESDAY, Sept. 15, 2020 (HealthDay News) -- America's air would become remarkably cleaner if the country accelerated its transition to electric cars that don't rely on fossil fuels, the American Lung Association said in a new report Tuesday. A full transition to electric cars by 2040 would also result in fewer deaths, asthma attacks, heart attacks, strokes and other health problems related to air pollution, said William Barrett, director of clean air advocacy for the American Lung Association and lead author of the "Road to Clean Air" report. "Our report is grounded in a scenario wherein electric vehicles account for 100% of new passenger vehicle sales by 2040, and of heavy duty truck sales by 2045, with heavy duty vehicle classes advancing along the way," he said. "Through a...

Some Psoriasis Meds May Also Help Prevent Heart Disease

15 September 2020
Some Psoriasis Meds May Also Help Prevent Heart DiseaseTUESDAY, Sept. 15, 2020 (HealthDay News) -- Biologic therapy for the skin condition psoriasis may reduce patients' risk of heart disease, new research suggests. Chronic inflammation in people with psoriasis is associated with the development of plaque in heart arteries, which increases the risk of coronary artery disease. In biologic therapy, patients receive protein-based infusions to reduce inflammation. "This is the first time an imaging study in humans has shown what one year of ongoing, untreated inflammation can do to arteries of the heart, and that we can reverse this damage," said study senior author Dr. Nehal Mehta. He's chief of the inflammation and cardiometabolic diseases lab at the U.S. National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute. "Untreated inflammation is dangerous. You...

Does Hostility Predispose You to a Second Heart Attack?

15 September 2020
Does Hostility Predispose You to a Second Heart Attack?TUESDAY, Sept. 15, 2020 (HealthDay News) -- If you have experienced a heart attack and you have an adversarial personality, new research suggests you might want to consider an attitude adjustment. An angry outlook may make you vulnerable to a second heart attack, the new study found. The study included more than 2,300 heart attack survivors, average age 67, who were followed for 24 months. Men accounted for 68% of the patients. At the start of the study, the patients' levels of hostility were assessed, and 57% were rated as hostile, according to the report published Sept. 15 in the European Journal of Cardiovascular Nursing. "Hostility is a personality trait that includes being sarcastic, cynical, resentful, impatient or irritable," said study author Dr. Tracey Vitori, from the...

More Than 1 in 3 U.S. Pediatricians Dismiss Vaccine-Refusing Families

More Than 1 in 3 U.S. Pediatricians Dismiss Vaccine-Refusing FamiliesTUESDAY, Sept. 15, 2020 (HealthDay News) -- Parents who choose to forgo or delay their children's vaccinations may quickly find themselves without a pediatrician. Just over half (51%) of pediatric offices in the United States have a policy to dismiss families that refuse childhood vaccines, a nationwide survey found. Thirty-seven percent of pediatricians themselves said they often dismissed families for refusing vaccines, and 6% said they would dismiss a family for choosing to spread out crucial early vaccines. "Arguments for dismissing families include that vaccination is the standard of care and the benefits far outweigh the risks. The evidence for vaccines is so strong that doctors may feel they just can't work with parents who stray so far from the standards of medical care,"...

Small Study Supports Donor Plasma Therapy for Severe COVID-19

15 September 2020
Small Study Supports Donor Plasma Therapy for Severe COVID-19TUESDAY, Sept. 15, 2020 (HealthDay News) -- Using the donated blood plasma of COVID-19 survivors to treat patients in the throes of severe coronavirus illness has met with some controversy. But a small new study suggests it could have real merit. The study of 39 patients with severe COVID-19 who were treated at one New York City hospital found the treatment appeared to bump up survival, researchers said. Plasma is the component of blood that contains immune system antibodies. So-called "convalescent plasma" from COVID-19 survivors is rich in antibodies against SARS-CoV-2, and it's thought that infusing the plasma into COVID-19 patients might help them battle their illness. On Aug. 23, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration made the unusual and controversial move of granting...

Probiotic Might Help Ease Children's Eczema

15 September 2020
Probiotic Might Help Ease Children`s EczemaTUESDAY, Sept. 15, 2020 (HealthDay News) -- Applying a type of "good" bacteria to the skin may relieve children of the itch and discomfort of eczema, a new, small study suggests. Eczema is a chronic inflammatory condition that causes dry, itchy skin and scaly rashes. It usually starts in early childhood, and commonly occurs along with allergies like hay fever and asthma, according to the American Academy of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology. There are numerous treatments for eczema, both topical and oral, but not all can be given to young kids. "So, there's a big need for safe and effective treatments for young children," said study author Dr. Ian Myles. He is a researcher and staff clinician with the U.S. National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases. For the study, his team...
