Unlike Humans, No Bone Loss for Gorillas as They Age

Unlike Humans, No Bone Loss for Gorillas as They AgeFRIDAY, Oct. 2, 2020 (HealthDay News) -- They are the closest relatives to humans, but gorillas have been spared one aging disease that people haven't: osteoporosis. The condition triggers accelerated bone loss and weakening. In a new study, researchers used a CT scanner to analyze the leg, arm and spine bones of 34 wild mountain gorillas from Rwanda -- 16 females and 17 males -- aged 11 to 43. That's the full adult age range of the species. The bones were from skeletons of gorillas who died in the wild and are part of a collection at a research center. Some of the signs of aging in the gorilla bones were similar to humans, including a general widening of the diameter of long bones and thinning of the bone wall. However, the gorilla bones didn't have the accelerated bone mineral...

Me, Me, Me: Narcissists Drawn to Politics, Study ShowsFRIDAY, Oct. 2, 2020 (HealthDay News) -- It's all about him. Or her. New research supports what much of the electorate may already suspect: Many narcissistic people are drawn to politics, and that could put democracy in danger. As the researchers defined it, narcissism is a combination of selfishness, entitlement and a need for admiration. "Successful democratic functioning requires trust in institutions, efficacy and engagement in the democratic process," said Peter Hatemi, a political science professor at Penn State University. However, "if those who are more narcissistic are the most engaged, and the political process itself is driving up narcissism in the public, in my opinion, the future of our democracy could be in jeopardy," Hatemi added in a school news release. For the...

Common Heartburn Meds Tied to Higher Diabetes Risk

2 October 2020
Common Heartburn Meds Tied to Higher Diabetes RiskFRIDAY, Oct. 2, 2020 (HealthDay News) -- Often-used drugs called proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) ease heartburn symptoms, but a new study suggests they might also increase the risk of type 2 diabetes. Chinese researchers drew on information from studies of more than 200,000 U.S. health care professionals and found that regular use of PPIs (such as Aciphex, Nexium, Prilosec, Prevacid, Protonix) was associated with a 24% higher risk of developing type 2 diabetes. The researchers also found that the longer people used the drugs, the higher their odds of diabetes. "Regular PPI use was likely to be associated with an increased risk of type 2 diabetes, particularly for those with prolonged use," the authors wrote in the report published online Sept. 28 in the journal Gut. Jinqiu Yuan,...

Both Bidens had attended Tuesday's presidential debate between Trump and Biden, the Washington Post reported. "I'm happy to report that Jill and I have tested negative for COVID," Biden said in a tweet. "Thank you to everyone for your messages of concern. I hope this serves as a reminder: wear a mask, keep social distance, and wash your hands." But hours after Trump tweeted about his positive COVID-19 test, Fox News anchor Chris Wallace, who moderated Tuesday night's presidential debate, said the Trump...

Why Getting a Flu Shot is More Important Than Ever This Fall

2 October 2020
Why Getting a Flu Shot is More Important Than Ever This FallFRIDAY, Oct. 2, 2020 (HealthDay News) -- Everyone 6 months of age and older should get a flu shot this season, the American Medical Association (AMA) says. With the coronavirus pandemic raging, a flu shot is more important than ever to protect yourself, your loved ones and your community from the flu. "Routine vaccination is essential preventive care for children, adolescents and adults -- including pregnant women -- that should not be delayed because of the pandemic," said AMA President Dr. Susan Bailey. Experts have warned that a "twindemic" of flu and COVID-19 could overwhelm the health care system. Just as wearing a mask helps prevent spread of the new coronavirus, getting a flu shot helps prevent people from getting sick and spreading flu to others. Flu shots also shield...

Beware Pet `Bearded Dragons`: CDC Says They Could Carry SalmonellaFRIDAY, Oct. 2, 2020 (HealthDay News) -- What next, 2020? In this year of surprising threats to public health, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is now investigating a pair of salmonella outbreaks among people who cuddled pet hedgehogs and bearded dragon lizards. No deaths have been reported in either outbreak but a dozen people have been hospitalized, the CDC said. In both cases, health officials have not identified a common supplier. The outbreak connected with bearded dragons has sickened 13 people in eight states and seven have been hospitalized. Ten of the sick people said they'd had contact with a bearded dragon before becoming ill. Patients reported buying bearded dragons from various pet stores in several states, the CDC said. The outbreak linked to pet...

AHA News: How 20 Years of Stroke Research Revealed Disparities Among Mexican AmericansFRIDAY, Oct. 2, 2020 (American Heart Association News) -- Belinda Zuniga was searching the classified ads for job notices 14 years ago when a single word caught her attention: stroke. Her grandmother had just had one. "We had so many questions. Her stroke really disabled her," said Zuniga, a certified nursing assistant. She jumped at the chance to work for BASIC, the Brain Attack Surveillance in Corpus Christi research project. Funded by the National Institutes of Health, BASIC is the only major study of stroke in Mexican Americans, the largest segment of the nation's Hispanic population.
