Hurricanes Leave Rise in Hospitalizations in Their Wake

Hurricanes Leave Rise in Hospitalizations in Their WakeWEDNESDAY, Dec. 23, 2020 (HealthDay News) -- Hospitals are swamped with older patients after hurricanes, a new study finds.Researchers analyzed data on hospitalizations for adults 65 and older in the month following eight of the United States' largest hurricanes in recent years. In this age group, post-hurricane increases in hospitalizations for any reason ranged from 10% (Hurricane Irene, 2011) to 23% (Hurricane Sandy, 2012).Adults 85 and older were significantly more likely to be hospitalized, as were poor older adults.Even after the researchers deleted the first three days after hurricanes Irene and Sandy, which might have accounted for injury/trauma-related admissions, older adult hospitalizations remained significantly higher after hurricanes."We can surmise that the stronger the...

Dads' Health Linked to Odds of Pregnancy Loss in Moms-to-Be

Dads` Health Linked to Odds of Pregnancy Loss in Moms-to-BeWEDNESDAY, Dec. 23, 2020 (HealthDay News) -- A large new study suggests that men who plan to be fathers should try to get themselves in shape first.Researchers found that when fathers-to-be had health conditions like high blood pressure or obesity, the odds that their partner might experience miscarriage or stillbirth increased. The findings do not prove that a father's health directly affects his partner's pregnancy, experts said. But given that men's health and lifestyle habits can affect sperm quality, it's plausible that dads make a difference in pregnancy outcomes."We do need more studies to figure out the mechanisms," said senior researcher Dr. Michael Eisenberg, director of male reproductive medicine and surgery at Stanford University School of Medicine in California. In the...

Vasectomy Reversal Just as Successful in Men Over 50WEDNESDAY, Dec. 23, 2020 (HealthDay News) -- Vasectomy reversal is as viable in men over 50 as in those who are younger, a new study says.About 20% of American men who have a vasectomy want to father children in the future, and about 6% will seek a vasectomy reversal, previous research shows. However, it's been unclear how a man's age may affect his chance for a successful reversal. To find out, researchers analyzed the outcomes of vasectomy reversal in about 3,000 men older than 50 (average age: 54) and 350 younger men (average age: 39). All of their procedures were performed by one surgeon. After vasectomy reversal, the partners of 33.4% of the younger men and 26.1% of the older men got pregnant. The study found that the chances of pregnancy were better when the woman was under 35 and/or...

Parents Feel the Strain as Pandemic Adds New Role: TeacherTUESDAY, Dec. 22, 2020 (HealthDay News) -- New York City mom and author Lyss Stern spends most of her weekdays trying to help her three children learn remotely, and things are not going smoothly for any of them."There are a lot of moving parts, and I feel like I am constantly being an octopus," she said. "Are they learning enough? Are they challenged? Are missed assignments piling up? Are they looking at TikTok on their phone under their desk when they should be learning?"Stern has become more anxious and stressed out than ever before, and she is far from alone. Many parents were forced to become "proxy educators" for their children without adequate training as schools transitioned to distance learning due to the COVID-19 pandemic. In a new study, researchers analyzed data from over...
