How to Safely Use the Right Flea and Tick Product for Your Pet
SATURDAY, June 26, 2021 (HealthDay News) -- When choosing and using flea and tick products for your pets, there are a number of things to consider, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration says.Work with your veterinarian to select the right product for your pet's species, life stage and weight. These products range from pills and chews given by mouth to collars, sprays, dips, shampoos, powders, and "spot-ons," liquid products squeezed onto the dog's or cat's skin, usually on their backs. Don't use a product on kittens or puppies unless the label specifically permits it, the FDA advises. Use flea combs to remove fleas and flea eggs, and a tick remover to take off ticks from puppies and kittens that are too young for chemical flea and tick products.Talk to your vet before using a product on...
Could a DNA Blood Test Spot a Range of Hidden Cancers?
25 June 2021
FRIDAY, June 25, 2021 (HealthDay News) -- Could a new one-and-done blood test designed to detect as many as 50 different types of cancer become a diagnostic game changer?Yes, say researchers, who report the method appears accurate and reliable at identifying and locating cancer, including some kinds for which there are now no effective screening methods."[The test] sets the stage for a new paradigm of screening individuals for multiple cancer with a single blood test, as opposed to the current situation where we screen for individual cancers," said study leader Dr. Eric Klein, chairman of the Glickman Urological and Kidney Institute at the Cleveland Clinic. The new blood test looks for the presence of so-called cell-free DNA (cfDNA), a telltale sign of cancerous tumors. The latest round...
First Signs of MS May Often Go Undiagnosed
25 June 2021
MONDAY, June 28, 2021 (HealthDay News) -- Early symptoms of multiple sclerosis may commonly be missed for years before the right diagnosis is made, a new study suggests.Researchers found that patients with MS had a higher-than-average number of medical appointments, with doctors of various specialties, for up to five years before their diagnosis. And for the most part, those visits were for neurological symptoms consistent with MS -- pointing to missed opportunities for an earlier diagnosis, the researchers say."We found that many complaints that led to patient visits were compatible with first clinical relapses that were not recognized as such," said senior researcher Dr. Bernhard Hemmer, a neurologist and professor at the Technical University of Munich in Germany."Relapse" refers to...
Lockdown Weight Gain May Have Caused Surge in New...
25 June 2021
FRIDAY, June 25, 2021 (HealthDay News) -- Rates and severity of type 2 diabetes among U.S. children rose during the COVID-19 pandemic, possibly due to weight gain during lockdowns, researchers say."While our study examined hospital admissions for type 2 diabetes in children at one center, the results may be a microcosm of what is happening at other children's hospitals across the country," said lead author Dr. Daniel Hsia, an associate professor in the clinical trials unit at Pennington Biomedical Research Center in Baton Rouge, La.Stay-at-home orders increased risk factors for type 2 diabetes. They include less physical activity, more screen time and other sedentary behaviors, sleep disturbances, and increased consumption of processed foods, all of which contribute to weight gain,...
Hawaii to Ease COVID Rules for Fully Vaccinated Tourists
25 June 2021
FRIDAY, June 25, 2021 (HealthDay News) -- Hawaii will drop COVID-19 testing and quarantine rules for fully vaccinated travelers from the U.S. mainland in two weeks, Gov. David Ige announced Thursday. When the restrictions are lifted on July 8, visitors using the quarantine exemption will have to upload their vaccination cards to a state website and bring a hard copy of their vaccination card with them, the Associated Press reported.Travelers must be two weeks beyond their final vaccine dose to be eligible for the exemption. Visitors who are not vaccinated will still have to produce a negative coronavirus test before flying to Hawaii, the AP reported.Ige recently said the state is expected to reach a 60% vaccination rate among all residents by July 8, a target he had previously set for...
99% of New U.S. COVID Hospitalizations, Deaths Occurring Among the Unvaccinated
25 June 2021
FRIDAY, June 25, 2021 (HealthDay News) -- Unvaccinated people now account for nearly all COVID-19 hospitalizations and deaths in the United States, federal government figures show. An Associated Press analysis of May data from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention found that infections in fully vaccinated people accounted for fewer than 1,200 (0.1%) of the more than 853,000 COVID-19 hospitalizations, and only about 150 (0.8%) of the more than 18,000 COVID-19 deaths.Citing limitations in the data, the CDC hasn't estimated rates of hospitalizations and deaths among fully vaccinated people, but the findings of the data analysis reflect what's being said by many health officials and experts, according to the AP.Unvaccinated people account for 98% to 99% of COVID-19 deaths in...
Is the ‘Delta Plus’ COVID Variant a New Concern?
25 June 2021
FRIDAY, June 25, 2021 (HealthDay News) -- India, already hit hard by the Delta variant of COVID-19, has labeled a closely related new variant — dubbed "Delta Plus" — as a "variant of concern."But some epidemiologists in India and abroad say there's just not enough data yet to warrant broader cautions about the variant, CBS News reported.Delta Plus cases are rising in India, and the variant has also been spotted in COVID-19 patients in the United States, United Kingdom, China, Japan, Poland, Portugal, Russia and Switzerland. On Tuesday, India said more than 40 cases of Delta Plus (officially called B.1.617.2.1) were found across three states — Maharashtra, Kerala and Madhya Pradesh.A group of labs in India have studied the new variant and report that it appears to have three...

25 June 2021
FRIDAY, June 25, 2021 (American Heart Association News) -- Dr. Rachel Levine wanted to work in health because she wanted to help people. Along the way, she became an icon.Levine, the assistant secretary for health in the Department of Health and Human Services, made history in March when she became the first openly transgender official confirmed by the Senate. It's been about healing – as a pediatrician, teacher, researcher and Pennsylvania's health secretary, fighting the opioid epidemic and COVID-19.She's not opposed to using her status to help spread her message. "I am very pleased to advocate for the LGBTQ community in terms of health equity and equality and fairness. And I feel that I have been able to do...
