How to Safely Use the Right Flea and Tick Product for Your PetSATURDAY, June 26, 2021 (HealthDay News) -- When choosing and using flea and tick products for your pets, there are a number of things to consider, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration says.Work with your veterinarian to select the right product for your pet's species, life stage and weight. These products range from pills and chews given by mouth to collars, sprays, dips, shampoos, powders, and "spot-ons," liquid products squeezed onto the dog's or cat's skin, usually on their backs. Use flea combs to remove fleas and flea eggs, and a tick remover to take off ticks from puppies and kittens that are too young for chemical flea and tick products.Talk to your vet before using a product on...

Could a DNA Blood Test Spot a Range of Hidden Cancers?FRIDAY, June 25, 2021 (HealthDay News) -- Could a new one-and-done blood test designed to detect as many as 50 different types of cancer become a diagnostic game changer?Yes, say researchers, who report the method appears accurate and reliable at identifying and locating cancer, including some kinds for which there are now no effective screening methods."[The test] sets the stage for a new paradigm of screening individuals for multiple cancer with a single blood test, as opposed to the current situation where we screen for individual cancers," said study leader Dr. Eric Klein, chairman of the Glickman Urological and Kidney Institute at the Cleveland Clinic. The new blood test looks for the presence of so-called cell-free DNA (cfDNA), a telltale sign of cancerous tumors. The latest round...

First Signs of MS May Often Go UndiagnosedMONDAY, June 28, 2021 (HealthDay News) -- Early symptoms of multiple sclerosis may commonly be missed for years before the right diagnosis is made, a new study suggests.Researchers found that patients with MS had a higher-than-average number of medical appointments, with doctors of various specialties, for up to five years before their diagnosis. And for the most part, those visits were for neurological symptoms consistent with MS -- pointing to missed opportunities for an earlier diagnosis, the researchers say."We found that many complaints that led to patient visits were compatible with first clinical relapses that were not recognized as such," said senior researcher Dr. Bernhard Hemmer, a neurologist and professor at the Technical University of Munich in Germany."Relapse" refers to...

They include less physical activity, more screen time and other sedentary behaviors, sleep disturbances, and increased consumption of processed foods, all of which contribute to weight gain,...

An Associated Press analysis of May data from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention found that infections in fully vaccinated people accounted for fewer than 1,200 (0.1%) of the more than 853,000 COVID-19 hospitalizations, and only about 150 (0.8%) of the more than 18,000 COVID-19 deaths.Citing limitations in the data, the CDC hasn't estimated rates of hospitalizations and deaths among fully vaccinated people, but the findings of the data analysis reflect what's being said by many health officials and experts, according to the AP.Unvaccinated people account for 98% to 99% of COVID-19 deaths in...
