More Evidence Heart Risk From COVID Vaccine Is Very Low
TUESDAY, Dec. 21, 2021 (HealthDay News) -- There's a very low risk of heart inflammation after getting the Pfizer and Moderna COVID-19 vaccines, according to a new study that adds to previous research supporting the safety of the shots. The two mRNA vaccines had been linked in some studies with an increased risk of myocarditis (inflammation of the heart muscle) and myopericarditis (inflammation of the outer lining of the heart) — rare but serious conditions usually triggered by a viral, bacterial or fungal infection. But no study had examined links between the vaccines and risk of heart inflammation in a complete population. That's what the authors of this new study did in their analysis of data from nearly 5 million people in Denmark, aged 12 and older, who received either the Pfizer...
Maker Cuts Price of Controversial New Alzheimer's Drug...
20 December 2021
MONDAY, Dec. 20, 2021 (HealthDay News) -- The maker of the pricey new Alzheimer's drug Aduhelm (aducanumab) said Monday it will slash the cost of its medication in half, effective Jan. 1, 2022.The move follows widespread criticism of the drug's original $56,000-a-year price tag.The reduction in the wholesale acquisition cost announced by Biogen means that the annual cost for a patient of average weight will be $28,200, the company said in a news release."Over the past several months, we have listened to the feedback of our stakeholders, and we are now taking important actions to improve patient access to Aduhelm," said Biogen CEO Michel Vounatsos. "Too many patients are not being offered the choice of Aduhelm due to financial considerations and are thus progressing beyond the point of...
48 COVID Cases Reported on World's Largest Cruise Ship
20 December 2021
MONDAY, Dec. 20, 2021 (HealthDay News) -- At least 48 passengers and crew members on Royal Caribbean's Symphony of the Seas — the world's largest cruise ship — have tested positive for COVID-19 and have been quarantined, the company said Monday.Of the 48 people who tested positive during the sailing, 98% were fully vaccinated. That's not surprising, since the overall vaccination rate among the nearly 6,100 passengers and crew was already at 95%, according to Royal Caribbean, CBS News reported. All travelers over the age of 12 had to be fully vaccinated and produce a negative test result before the voyage, according to the company. Cruise companies tightened their COVID-19 protocols this summer — requiring pre-cruise tests for everyone, not just unvaccinated passengers — when the...
Proctor & Gamble Recalls Pantene, Herbal Essences...
20 December 2021
MONDAY, Dec. 20, 2021 (HealthDay News) – Proctor & Gamble has voluntarily recalled several dry shampoo sprays and hair conditioner spray products with brand names Pantene, Herbal Essences, Aussie and Waterless because of benzene contamination. This follows an earlier recall of some aerosol spray Old Spice and Secret products, also manufactured by Proctor & Gamble. Benzene is a cancer-causing chemical that can be inhaled and absorbed through the skin. It can cause leukemia, blood cancer of the bone marrow and blood disorders that can be life-threatening.The recalled products -- all in aerosol cans -- were distributed throughout the United States. Some of the products under recall are Pantene Smooth Talker Dry Conditioning Oil; Aussie Smooth Vibes Dry Conditioner; Herbal Essences Blue...
Many Overweight Kids Already Have Hardened Arteries, Diabetes
20 December 2021
MONDAY, Dec. 20, 2021 (HealthDay News) -- If your children struggle with their weight, new research suggests they may also suffer from diseases once seen only in adults.Stiffening of the arteries, which can lead to early heart attacks and strokes, and type 2 diabetes were found in many of the more than 600 obese children, adolescents and young adults studied. And the problem is only getting worse: According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, during the pandemic obesity among American children has jumped from 19% to 22%."We're all very well aware that childhood, adolescence and adulthood obesity rates are quite staggering, and the risk for related chronic diseases is quite pervasive," said senior researcher Joseph Kindler, an assistant professor in the department of...
AHA News: Her Best Friend Died Suddenly at 31. Now, She Spreads the Word About Heart Health.
20 December 2021
MONDAY, Dec. 20, 2021 (American Heart Association News) -- On a steamy July afternoon in Fort Scott, Kansas, 16-year-old Lindsey Lewis, dressed in a swimsuit and shorts and driving her well-loved convertible, picked up her friend Jill Overstake. They stopped for sodas on their way to the local rock quarry. A group of friends they called "the boys" were jumping off the rocks into the water.Once there, Lindsey gave her friend a look that implied, "Shall we?""Absolutely not," Jill said. "It's not safe."Lindsey smacked Jill on the shoulder playfully, as she often did, and said, "We're doing it!"She grabbed Jill by the hand and in they went, splashing into the murky water 25 feet or so below. They laughed as they got out, their long hair dripping, the sun warm on their skin."In hindsight,...
Moderna Says Its Booster Protects Well Against Omicron
20 December 2021
MONDAY, Dec. 20, 2021 (HealthDay News) -- Moderna Inc. announced Monday that its COVID-19 vaccine booster shot significantly increased antibodies against the Omicron variant.“The dramatic increase in COVID-19 cases from the Omicron variant is concerning to all. However, these data showing that the currently authorized Moderna COVID-19 booster can boost neutralizing antibody levels 37-fold higher than pre-boost levels are reassuring,†Moderna CEO Stéphane Bancel, said in a company statement. Moderna also noted that a dose double the size of a normal booster, equivalent to that used in the main shots and in the third dose given primarily to immunocompromised people, raised antibody levels by 83 times. As well, “to respond to this highly transmissible variant, Moderna will continue...

20 December 2021
MONDAY, Dec. 20, 2021 (HealthDay News) -- Many parents want to make the holiday season magical for their kids, but for some the stress they feel trying to live up to that ideal may actually be doing the opposite.A poll from Michigan Medicine found that about one in five parents said their holiday stress level negatively affected their child's enjoyment of the season. Meanwhile, roughly one-quarter of parents also said they set overly idealistic holiday expectations."People are surrounded by images depicting the holidays as a time of peace, love and joy.
