AHA News: Making a Lifetime of Good Brain Health a Global Priority

AHA News: Making a Lifetime of Good Brain Health a Global PriorityWEDNESDAY, Dec. 22, 2021 (American Heart Association News) -- Twenty years ago, the Canadian province of Ontario launched an aggressive campaign to tackle stroke from every angle: It hyped prevention and awareness; beefed up its acute care practices and response times; and increased access to post-stroke rehabilitation. It worked. Stroke rates fell 32% within a decade. But that wasn't all. Dementia rates also fell – by about 7% – confirming what Dr. Vladimir Hachinski, a research pioneer in this field, already suspected: Preventing strokes helps prevent dementias. Now, Canada is exploring how to apply this lesson nationwide. And Hachinski, the neuroscientist leading the effort, has an even bigger vision. He wants the whole world to focus not solely on stroke and dementia prevention...

Teens With Autism and Driving: Often a Tough Discussion

22 December 2021
Teens With Autism and Driving: Often a Tough DiscussionWEDNESDAY, Dec. 22, 2021 (HealthDay News) -- Determining whether a young person with autism is ready to drive can be tricky for their health care providers. That's the upshot of a new survey that included 78 pediatric physicians, psychologists and other providers in Pennsylvania and New Jersey.Half of the respondents said they routinely talk to teen patients about their transportation needs with an eye to encouraging mobility and independence, but only 1 in 5 had had such discussions with patients with autism. While 33% said they believed they could assess if patients without autism were ready to drive, only 8% believed they could do so for those with autism.“It was also surprising to learn that only 1 in 4 providers refer their patients, autistic or not, to other providers for...

Fish Oil Has No Effect on Depression, Study FindsWEDNESDAY, Dec. 22, 2021 (HealthDay News) -- They may have other proven health benefits, but new research shows that fish oil supplements don't prevent depression or improve mood. Some experts recommend omega-3 fish oil supplements to help prevent depression in high-risk patients, but studies have yielded mixed results and there are no guidelines on using fish oil for that purpose in the general population. To learn more, researchers studied over 18,000 depression-free adults, 50 and older, who took vitamin D and/or omega-3 supplements or placebos for between 5 and 7 years, on average. The investigators found no evidence that omega-3 supplements warded off depression or boosted mood, according to the report published Dec. 21 in the Journal of the American Medical Association."There are...

School COVID Outbreaks Drop When Adults Wear Masks,...

22 December 2021
School COVID Outbreaks Drop When Adults Wear Masks, Study FindsWEDNESDAY, Dec. 22, 2021 (HealthDay News) -- Of course kids make up the bulk of people at schools, but new evidence shows that requiring masks for adults working at schools greatly reduces the severity of COVID-19 outbreaks. In the study, the researchers found that children were most often the first identified cases in schools. However, outbreaks in schools were more severe when an adult was the first case, and mask wearing by adults significantly reduced secondary cases, according to the report published online Dec. 20 in Frontiers in Public Health."We can therefore recommend all-time mandatory masking in schools for both children and adults. In preschools, mask wearing could also reduce secondary cases," said study co-author Anika Kästner, of the University Medicine Greifswald, in...

City Living Is Hotter With Urban 'Heat Penalty'

22 December 2021
City Living Is Hotter With Urban `Heat Penalty`WEDNESDAY, Dec. 22, 2021 (HealthDay News) -- Summer can sizzle in the city, but a new report finds urban living is getting hotter than ever before. The research shows that city dwellers may be suffering from what scientists call an urban "heat penalty" -- an extra two to six hours a day of uncomfortably hot summer temperatures. And most of those sweltering hours occur at night because cities soak in heat during the day and release it at night. It's known as the urban heat island effect.“People have known about the urban heat island effect for more than 180 years, but the fact that the differences between nighttime and daytime and among different cities is so substantial is somewhat surprising,” said Yun Qian, an atmospheric scientist at the Department of Energy's Pacific Northwest...

Program Aims to Get Lifesaving Drugs to Kids With Cancer in Poorer CountriesWEDNESDAY, Dec. 22, 2021 (HealthDay News) -- A new program to boost the supply of cancer medicines for children in low- and middle-income countries has been announced by the World Health Organization (WHO) and St. Jude Children's Research Hospital. The hospital is making a six-year, $200 million investment to launch the Global Platform for Access to Childhood Cancer Medicines, which will provide medicines at no cost to participating countries in the pilot phase. This is the largest financial commitment for a global effort in childhood cancer medicines to date, according to the hospital."Close to nine in 10 children with cancer live in low- and middle-income countries," WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said in a hospital news release. "Survival in these countries is less...

COVID Helps Drive Nearly Two-Year Decline in U.S. Life ExpectancyWEDNESDAY, Dec. 22, 2021 (HealthDay News) - - COVID-19 is now the third leading cause of death for Americans and has shortened life expectancy by nearly two years, a drop not seen since World War II, a new government report shows. Life expectancy dropped from 78.8 in 2010 to 77 in 2020 as the age-adjusted death rate increased 17%, going from 715 deaths per 100,000 people in 2019 to 835 deaths per 100,000 in 2020, researchers from the U.S Centers for Disease Control and Prevention found."We haven't seen a decline like this since 1943," said Robert Anderson, chief of mortality statistics at CDC's National Center for Health Statistics (NCHS)."Normally, we don't see fluctuations of more than two or three tenths in a year. So, any sort of change of this magnitude is really quite unusual....

"It affects other people -- you're putting other people at risk, your loved ones, your friends, neighbors, strangers you run into. And your choice can be the difference between life or death.
