3 Factors Helped Teens Stay Mentally Healthy During PandemicTUESDAY, Jan. 25, 2022 (HealthDay News) -- Support from family and friends, along with exercise and sufficient sleep, have helped protect teens' mental health during the pandemic, new research shows. The study also found that teen girls have been more likely than boys to suffer mental distress during the pandemic. For the study, researchers analyzed data gathered from more than 3,000 participants, aged 11 to 14, in the Adolescent Brain Cognitive Development (ABCD) study — the largest long-term study of brain development and child health ever conducted in the United States — before and during the early months of the pandemic. The factors most strongly associated with protecting teens against stress, anxiety and depression were positive relationships (such as talking about plans for the...

AHA News: At 26, Elementary School Music Teacher Had a Stroke Between ClassesTUESDAY, Jan. 25, 2022 (American Heart Association News) -- Christina Saldivar felt well-rested and energetic when she headed to her elementary school in Newport News, Virginia, on a Monday morning in February 2020. At 26, she was enjoying her first year of teaching music at the same campus instead of bouncing around as an itinerant teacher. The morning opened with back-to-back classes to second and first graders. Using simple instruments like recorders and rhythm sticks, she taught the children tone and rhythm.Next up, she was taking kindergarteners to the gym to dance. First, she needed to use the restroom. While in a stall, she felt overcome by a headache so powerful that it felt like someone was hammering against the front of her skull. Then came waves of nausea and lightheadedness....

Omicron Shows Signs of Ebbing as U.S. Cases Fall, Hospitalizations Level OffTUESDAY, Jan. 25, 2022 (HealthDay News) -- Weeks after Omicron began ravaging the United States, experts are now seeing statistical signs that suggest the wildly contagious variant might be losing steam.More states have now reported they have passed their peaks in new cases, and new cases have begun to drop nationally -- daily average cases fell to around 690,000 yesterday, down from about 807,000 10 days ago, CDC data shows. New coronavirus hospital admissions have also leveled off.Where case counts have fallen, the drop has been precipitous, similar to what was seen in South Africa recently after Omicron careened through that country. The latest trends have public health experts around the world daring to hope that Omicron will be the variant that turns a pandemic into an endemic...

Young Women at Higher Risk for Stroke Than Male Peers: Study

25 January 2022
Young Women at Higher Risk for Stroke Than Male Peers: StudyTUESDAY, Jan. 25, 2022 (HealthDay News) -- Strokes aren't common among young people, but when they do happen, they strike more often in women than men, a new review finds.Of the nearly 800,000 Americans who suffer a stroke each year, 10% to 15% are adults age 45 or younger, according to the American Heart Association. The new research suggests that young women may face a particular risk: Those age 35 and younger were 44% more likely than men their age to suffer an ischemic stroke.Ischemic strokes, which account for the large majority of all strokes, occur when a blood vessel supplying the brain is obstructed. The study cannot pinpoint the reasons for the higher risk among young women, said researcher Dr. Sharon Poisson, an associate professor of neurology at the University of Colorado...

3 Reasons Why Trying to Get COVID Is a Bad Idea

3 Reasons Why Trying to Get COVID Is a Bad IdeaTUESDAY, Jan. 25, 2022 (HealthDay News) -- If you're wondering whether to intentionally expose yourself to the Omicron variant with the goal of developing immunity, the answer is absolutely not, experts say. "It sounds like playing with fire to me," said Dr. Nicole Van Groningen, a hospitalist who has treated hundreds of COVID-19 patients at Cedars-Sinai in Los Angeles.First of all, you do risk becoming severely ill, even though Omicron appears to cause milder illness among many vaccinated people. "There is no guarantee you'll have a mild case," Van Groningen said in a Cedars-Sinai news release. "Some people still get really sick and need to come to the hospital. Others feel really miserable at home. Some patients say it's worse than the worst flu they ever had."Secondly, you could...

How Many Steps to Walk Away From Diabetes?TUESDAY, Jan. 25, 2022 (HealthDay News) -- When older people cut back on physical activity, their risk of type 2 diabetes rises. But walking regularly can help, a new study suggests. The more steps you take -- and the more intensely you walk -- the lower your odds for type 2 diabetes, researchers found. To assess the link between walking and diabetes risk, they enrolled more than 4,800 women, 65 and older, who did not have diabetes and lived independently. For 24 hours a day for one week, the women wore a device on their hip that recorded the number of steps taken each day. The women's health was monitored for up to seven years, and 8% developed diabetes during that time.“A key figure from our study is that for every 1,000 steps per day, our results showed a 6% lower diabetes risk in...

Can CBD Help Curb COVID? Maybe, But More Study Needed

Can CBD Help Curb COVID? Maybe, But More Study NeededMONDAY, Jan. 24, 2022 (HealthDay News) -- Cannabidiol, a compound derived from marijuana, appears to show promise in blocking replication of the COVID-19 virus and preventing its spread, lab and animal studies show.CBD inhibited the ability of the coronavirus to spread in human lung cell samples, and also suppressed COVID-19 infection in the lungs and nasal passages of lab mice. Although research in animals doesn't always pan out in humans, the success of CBD may not be limited to the lab.People taking Epidiolex — a U.S. Food and Drug Administration-approved form of CBD used to treat epilepsy — tested positive for COVID-19 at significantly lower rates than those not prescribed the drug, researchers report. But don't rush out to your local dispensary just yet — researchers got...
