Infected People Gain Long-Lasting Immunity Against Coronavirus: Study

Infected People Gain Long-Lasting Immunity Against Coronavirus: StudyWEDNESDAY, March 2, 2022 (HealthDay News) -- People who've had COVID-19 may have long-term immune protection against new variants of the virus, but researchers say vaccination remains the best safeguard against reinfection.Their small new study analyzed blood samples from 24 people whose COVID infections ranged from symptom-free to severe enough to send them to the hospital. While those who had mild or no symptoms didn't always have SARS-CoV-2-specific antibodies in their blood, all 24 had patrolling immune cells called memory B cells that produced SARS-CoV-2 antibodies when exposed to the virus."We think these results give us real reason for optimism," said senior author Dr. Bill Messer, an assistant professor of molecular microbiology and immunology at Oregon Health & Science...

Variants of COVID Virus May 'Hide Out' in Body: Study

2 March 2022
Variants of COVID Virus May `Hide Out` in Body: StudyWEDNESDAY, March 2, 2022 (HealthDay News) -- It looks like coronavirus variants can hide out in the human body much like some of their viral cousins do, making it hard for infected people to get rid of the virus entirely, researchers report.Successive variants have appeared since the original version of SARS-CoV-2 triggered the global pandemic, and vaccines and antibody treatments have proven less effective against some of these variants.“Our results showed that one can have several different virus variants in one’s body," said Kapil Gupta, a senior research associate in biochemistry at the University of Bristol in the U.K. "Some of these variants may use kidney or spleen cells as their niche to hide, while the body is busy defending against the dominant virus type. This could make...

Is Pandemic Social Media Use Worsening Tic Disorders in Teens?

1 March 2022
Is Pandemic Social Media Use Worsening Tic Disorders in Teens?TUESDAY, March 1, 2022 (HealthDay News) -- For reasons that remain murky, new research warns that a spike in social media use during the pandemic might have worsened tic disorders in children.Tics are sudden twitches, movements or sounds that people do repeatedly because they can't control their body. In the study, 90% of 20 tic patients aged 11 to 21 said they increased their use of social media during the pandemic. While tic frequency did not appear to rise with social media use, the scientists found that more time spent on social media was associated with the onset of more severe tic behaviors.Still, study author Dr. Jessica Frey stressed that the finding is preliminary. A larger study involving more tic patients is already in the works, to better understand exactly what is...

Cloth Masks Don't Cut It for Keeping COVID Away

1 March 2022
Cloth Masks Don`t Cut It for Keeping COVID Away TUESDAY, March 1, 2022 (HealthDay News) -- If you're counting on a cloth mask to protect you from COVID-19, you may need to re-think that strategy, a new study shows.Researchers found that cloth face masks do little to fend off tiny airborne particles, while concluding that specialized N95 and similar masks do a much better job."Masks are air filters, and woven fabrics, such as cotton, make for good jeans, shirts, and other apparel, but they are lousy air filters," said study co-author Richard Sear. "So, use woven fabric for clothing, and N95s, FFP2s or KF94s for masks," added Sear, of the University of Surrey in England.COVID-19 is transmitted primarily via airborne particles. An infected person breathes out virus-carrying particles that can be inhaled by another person, causing them...

Had Hernia Surgery? You May Need Another

1 March 2022
Had Hernia Surgery? You May Need AnotherTUESDAY, March 1, 2022 (HealthDay News) -- If you've had hernia repair surgery and you think you've solved your medical issue for good, you might be wrong.A hernia occurs when an internal organ pushes through a weak region of muscle or tissue, often creating a noticeable bulge. Hernias typically do not improve without surgery. Left untreated, a hernia can cause severe complications, including cutting off blood flow to surrounding tissue.A new study found that about 1 in 6 (15%) of older Americans who'd had hernia repair surgery required repeat surgery less than 10 years later, which is just a slight improvement from the 1990s, when the rate was about 1 in 5. "After a patient has had surgery to fix their hernia, it can be devastating for that hernia to come back, especially if it means...
