Eye Scans Could Spot Parkinson's in Earliest Stages

Eye Scans Could Spot Parkinson`s in Earliest StagesTUESDAY, Aug. 22, 2023 (HealthDay News) -- British researchers may have found a way to diagnose Parkinson’s disease several years sooner.Researchers at University College London and Moorfields Eye Hospital say that eye scans may be able to detect signs of Parkinson’s up to seven years before diagnosis.“I continue to be amazed by what we can discover through eye scans. While we are not yet ready to predict whether an individual will develop Parkinson’s, we hope that this method could soon become a pre-screening tool for people at risk of disease," said lead author Dr. Siegfried Wagner, of the UCL Institute of Ophthalmology and Moorfields Eye Hospital. “Finding signs of a number of diseases before symptoms emerge means that, in the future, people could have the time to make...

The findings, said senior study author Tim Duong, are the “first to my knowledge.” Duong is a vice chair of research at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine and Montefiore Medical Center in New York City. He stressed that the increased risk seen among COVID patients is not limited to those with severe illness. At an average six months after initial infection, just over a fifth of patients who had been hospitalized with COVID...

More Americans Grow Old Alone, and Faltering Minds Bring RisksMONDAY, Aug. 21, 2023 (HealthDay News) -- An estimated 26 million Americans 50 and older live alone, and researchers estimate that more than 4 million have dementia or cognitive impairment. That means a large number of older Americans are at risk for medication mix-ups, unsafe driving, wandering and missing important medical appointments. And, a new study warns, the U.S. health care system is ill-equipped to address the needs of this population.“Our study is significant because it provided, for the first time, strong evidence that it is much more difficult to care for patients with dementia who live alone," said lead author Elena Portacolone, an associate professor at the Institute for Health & Aging at the University of California, San Francisco. "As a result, in the United States,...

`Time Is Brain`: More Americans Waiting Longer for Best Care After StrokeMONDAY, Aug. 21, 2023 (HealthDay News) -- When people suffering a stroke need a transfer to another hospital, time is of the essence. But a new study finds that most Americans in that situation face delays. The study, published recently in the Journal of the American Medical Association, looked at the issue of "door-in, door-out" times in stroke care. That is, how long do patients have to wait from the time they arrive in the emergency department (ED) until they are transferred to a hospital that can provide advanced stroke care? The answer, in most cases, was too long: About 73% of U.S. stroke patients had to wait for over two hours — or beyond the goal that experts have set for stroke transfers. The study cannot pinpoint the reasons, said senior researcher Dr. Shyam Prabhakaran, a...
