Could Black Tea Lengthen Your Life?

Could Black Tea Lengthen Your Life?TUESDAY, Aug. 30, 2022 (HealthDay News) -- A cup of tea can soothe your spirit, but drinking a couple of cups each day may also lower your chances of dying early, new research suggests. In the study of nearly 500,000 men and women who took part in the U.K. Biobank, researchers found that compared with people who didn't drink tea, those who drank two or more cups a day lowered their risk of dying by 9% to 13%. And it made no difference if they took milk and sugar with their tea, or also drank coffee. These results suggest that black tea, even at higher levels of intake, can be part of a healthy diet. Yet, "while these findings may offer reassurance to tea drinkers, they do not indicate that people should start drinking tea or increase their tea consumption for health benefits," lead...

Small Study Supports TPOXX as Monkeypox TreatmentTUESDAY, Aug. 30, 2022 (HealthDay News) -- The drug tecovirimat appears to be safe and effective for treating the symptoms and skin lesions of monkeypox, a small study suggests.Tecovirimat (TPOXX) is an antiviral drug for the treatment of smallpox. It works by limiting spread of the virus in the body. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has allowed doctors to prescribe tecovirimat on a "compassionate use basis" to treat adults and children with orthopoxvirus infections, including monkeypox."We have very limited clinical data on the use of tecovirimat for monkeypox infection. There is much to learn about the natural progression of the disease and how tecovirimat and other antivirals may affect it," researcher Dr. Angel Desai said in a news release from the University of...

Pregnant Women Face Exposures to Dangerous Chemicals DailyTUESDAY, Aug. 30, 2022 (HealthDay News) -- Pregnant women are exposed to toxic chemicals in dishware, hair coloring, plastics and pesticides that can heighten their risk of cancer and harm child development, a new study warns.Melamine and its major byproduct, cyanuric acid, were found in nearly all the 171 women in the study and levels were highest among women of color and those exposed to tobacco. In addition, four aromatic amines that are used in dyes and pigments were also found in nearly all pregnant participants."These chemicals are of serious concern due to their links to cancer and developmental toxicity, yet they are not routinely monitored in the United States," researcher Tracey Woodruff said in a news release from the University of California, San Francisco. She directs the...

COVID Vaccine Won't Raise Stroke Risk

30 August 2022
COVID Vaccine Won`t Raise Stroke RiskTUESDAY, Aug. 30, 2022 (HealthDay News) -- COVID-19 vaccines do not increase your risk for stroke, new research shows, but severe COVID infection does, and experts hope the finding will ease the concerns of those who are hesitant to get the shot.“We now know that patients who've had a vaccine are not at higher risk of stroke, thanks to a large body of data with millions of patients who have been included,” said Dr. Alexis Simpkins, director of vascular research at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles. “You're 200 times less likely — if you compare the numbers — to have had a stroke if you were vaccinated, than a person who was hospitalized with severe COVID-19 and was not vaccinated.”This is because COVID infection, particularly severe infection, can cause...

Biggest Study Yet Finds No Link Between Statins, Muscle Aches

29 August 2022
Biggest Study Yet Finds No Link Between Statins, Muscle AchesMONDAY, Aug. 29, 2022 (HealthDay News) -- Cholesterol-lowering statins are proven lifesavers, but they’ve also gained a reputation for causing muscle aches and pains in a good number of patients. That reputation is undeserved, according to a new large-scale analysis of data from nearly two dozen clinical trials of statins. There’s a less than 10% chance that muscle symptoms reported by patients are caused by the statin they are taking, researchers report.“Our analysis showed that over 90% of muscle symptoms were not attributable to the statin, and those cases that were due to statins occurred mainly within the first year of treatment,” said joint lead researcher Colin Baigent, director of the Medical Research Council Population Health Research Unit at the University of Oxford, in...

Is There a Best Time of Day to Take Your Blood Pressure Pill?

29 August 2022
Is There a Best Time of Day to Take Your Blood Pressure Pill?MONDAY, Aug. 29, 2022 (HealthDay News) -- It doesn't seem to matter what time of day or night you take your blood pressure medication, a new study finds. The results of a randomized trial of more than 21,000 patients with high blood pressure who were followed for over five years show that protection against heart attack, stroke and vascular death is not affected if the drugs are taken in the morning or evening. These findings contradict previous research that suggested a large benefit when the medications are taken at night. For the study, men and women were randomly assigned to take their blood pressure drugs in the morning or evening. The researchers then looked for hospitalization for heart attack, stroke, or death from cardiovascular disease.Over a median of five years, 3.4% of...

Let the Sun In: More Natural Light at Home Lightens Your MoodMONDAY, Aug. 29, 2022 (HealthDay News) -- It’s safe to say that when searching for somewhere to live most people prefer open, airy spaces over dark and dingy ones. Now, new research suggests why: Homes filled with lots of natural light makes for happier residents."We sought to explore the relationship between natural light and emotional well-being in residential indoor spaces," explained study co-author Javiera Morales-Bravo, an architect at the University of Chile in Santiago. The idea for the study "came after a year of [COVID] lockdown, during which people spent most of their time at home, and we saw increased cases of anxiety and depression," Morales-Bravo said. So, to explore how home light might impact mood, she and co-author Pablo Navarrete-Hernandez launched a virtual...

Thousands of U.S. Patients Got COVID Treatments Rejected as Useless by FDAMONDAY, Aug. 29, 2022 (HealthDay News) -- U.S. doctors administered more than 150,000 doses of useless monoclonal antibody treatments to COVID-19 patients early this year, spending loads of cash on therapies that had been deemed of no benefit, a new study has found. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration deauthorized the use of two COVID monoclonal antibody treatments in January, after it was found that the therapies did not work against the Omicron variant of SARS-CoV-2.Despite this, COVID-19 patients received more than 158,000 doses of bamlanivimab/etesevimab and casirivimab/imdevimab well into 2022, potentially costing millions of dollars while providing little to no relief, according to the study by researchers at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center (BIDMC) in Boston. The proportion...
