Hurricanes Threaten Many U.S. Coastal Hospitals With Serious FloodingTHURSDAY, Sept. 29, 2022 (HealthDay News) -- As Hurricane Ian slams Florida, a new study finds that many hospitals positioned near the Gulf and East Coasts are vulnerable to severe flooding from such storms.Ian struck the West Coast of Florida Wednesday and careened toward the East Coast. It's then expected to veer north.Researchers found that even relatively weak hurricanes pose a serious threat of flooding to hospitals along the two coasts. While a Category 1 storm produces minor damage, including to trees and power lines, a Category 4 storm causes catastrophic damage to homes with winds strong enough to tear off roofs. Perceptive Pooches Can Smell Your StressTHURSDAY, Sept. 29, 2022 (HealthDay News) -- Everyone knows dogs have a keen sense of smell, but now researchers have discovered they can even smell stress in the breath and sweat of humans."Dogs possess an incredible sense of smell. Previous research has demonstrated their ability to detect changes within the human body from odor alone, such as our blood sugar levels," said study author Clara Wilson, a PhD student in the School of Psychology at Queen's University Belfast in Northern Ireland. "Whether dogs' capabilities extend to detecting odors associated with psychological experiences had been far less explored."Wilson and her collaborators investigated the idea of whether dogs could assess human psychological states with scent rather than audio or visual cues, similar to dogs that...

Jynneos Vaccine Protects Against Monkeypox in Early U.S. DataWEDNESDAY, Sept. 29, 2022 (HealthDay News) – The Jynneos vaccine, originally designed to guard against smallpox infection, also seems to protect against monkeypox, new U.S. government data shows. The potency of the vaccine in a real-world setting was impressive: While two doses of the vaccine offered more protection against monkeypox, even people who received a single dose were still much less likely to get sick, health officials said Wednesday.Single doses were used earlier in the outbreak as a way to stretch limited supplies, but health officials would now like to see people at risk for monkeypox infection complete the vaccine series, the Associated Press reported.“We’re really asking providers to do outreach to get people their second doses,” Dr. Rochelle Walensky, director...

Weight-Loss Surgery Linked to New-Onset EpilepsyTHURSDAY, Sept. 29, 2022 (HealthDay News) -- Weight-loss surgery can change a person's life and health, but new research warns it might also come with a slight risk of developing epilepsy.People who had the surgery had a 45% relative increased risk of developing epilepsy, compared with people who did not have the surgery. Moreover, those who suffered a stroke after weight-loss surgery were 14 times more likely to develop epilepsy than those who did not have a stroke, Canadian researchers reported. "Patients who are considering weight-loss surgery should discuss the benefits and risks of bariatric surgery with their doctor," said lead researcher Dr. Jorge Burneo, a professor of neurology at Western University in London, Ontario. "It's important to note that, though elevated, the risk of...

`Bionic Pancreas` Could Make Life Easier for People With Type 1 DiabetesTHURSDAY, Sept. 29, 2022 (HealthDay News) -- A new technology dubbed the "bionic pancreas" may beat standard treatment in helping people with type 1 diabetes control their blood sugar levels, a clinical trial has found.Among adults and children with type 1 diabetes, those who used the bionic pancreas for three months saw their average blood sugar levels decline — without an increase in potentially dangerous blood sugar lows, the researchers reported. The device, called the iLet Bionic Pancreas, is under review by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. If approved, it would be the most automated system available for managing type 1 diabetes — tracking blood sugar levels and delivering insulin with minimal input from patients."This technology takes more of the burden away from...

Not Enough Older Americans Are Checking Blood Pressure At HomeTHURSDAY, Sept. 29, 2022 (HealthDay News) -- Regular home monitoring can help with blood pressure control, but only half of people who have hypertension or other related conditions actually do it, a new study found. Of Americans ages 50 to 80 who take blood pressure medications or have a health condition affected by high blood pressure, only 48% regularly check their pressure at home or other places, according to findings.About 62% of patients affected by these issues have said a health care provider has encouraged them to monitor their blood pressure at home. When providers did make that recommendation, study participants were more 3.5 times more likely to do the tests at home. The data came from the National Poll on Healthy Aging, based at the University of Michigan Institute for...
