Brain Secrets of the Super-Sharp 'Super-Agers'
MONDAY, Oct. 3, 2022 (HealthDay News) -- Researchers have discovered another clue as to how some older people stay sharp as a tack into their 80s and beyond: Their brain cells are really big.The study focused on what scientists have dubbed "super-agers" — a select group of elderly adults who have the memory skills of people decades younger. The researchers found that in a memory-related area of the brain, super-agers had larger neurons than elderly adults with average brain power — and even in comparison to people 30 years their junior. What's more, those big brain cells were relatively free of "tau tangles," one of the key markers of Alzheimer's disease.Tau is a protein that, in healthy brain cells, helps stabilize the internal scaffolding. But abnormal versions of tau — ones that...
AHA News: At 21, Her College Graduation and a Stroke...
3 October 2022
MONDAY, Oct. 3, 2022 (American Heart Association News) -- Marissa Fattore's graduation from Kutztown University of Pennsylvania took place on a warm spring day. For the occasion, Marissa had her nails done and wore a new dress and high heels.Despite her excitement, she felt crummy. She had a headache and her brain was fuzzy. It was probably just nerves, she thought.More than 500 people were seated at the indoor ceremony, including Marissa's parents, brother and maternal grandmother. Before the ceremony started, she called her parents, Daniel and Karen Fattore, to ask them to hold her purse. When they met up, she described her ailments. Her parents figured it was due to stress and exhaustion after a busy end-of-school period.Marissa took her place with the other graduates. As her name...
Listeria Outbreak Tied to Soft Cheeses Sold at...
3 October 2022
MONDAY, Oct. 3, 2022 (HealthDay News) -- U.S. health officials have warned that numerous brands of brie and camembert cheese may contain Listeria, a potentially dangerous bacteria. Old Europe Cheese Inc. has recalled more than 20 brands of cheese from retail and wholesale stores nationwide and in Mexico after six people in six states were infected with a specific strain of Listeria. Stores that sold the potentially contaminated cheese include Albertsons, Giant Foods, Lidl, Stop & Shop and Whole Foods, the company said. The recalled cheeses were sold under numerous brands: Black Bear, Block & Barrel, Charmant, Cobblestone, Culinary Tour, Fredericks, Fresh Thyme, Glenview Farms, Good & Gather, Heinen’s, Joan of Arc La Bonne Vie, Lidl, Life in Provence, Market 32, Matrie’d,...
Smoggy Air Could Worsen COVID, Even If You're Vaccinated
3 October 2022
MONDAY, Oct. 3, 2022 (HealthDay News) -- Exposure to air pollution can impede COVID-19 recovery, whether someone is vaccinated or not, according to new research. "These findings are important because they show that, while COVID-19 vaccines are successful at reducing the risk of hospitalization, people who are vaccinated and exposed to polluted air are still at increased risk for worse outcomes than vaccinated people not exposed to air pollution," said study co-author Anny Xiang, a senior research scientist at Kaiser Permanente Southern California.Researchers analyzed medical records from patients in the Kaiser Permanente Southern California health system. This included more than 50,000 patients 12 and older diagnosed with COVID-19 in July or August 2021, while the Delta variant was...
Sexual Issues Can Plague Young Women Who've Survived Cancer
3 October 2022
MONDAY, Oct. 3, 2022 (HealthDay News) -- Young women who have survived cancer are at risk of having sexual problems, such as loss of libido and discomfort, a new study finds. The quality of the survivor's sex life is also influenced by the type of cancer she experienced and the intensity of the treatment, researchers found. "This is one of the largest population-based studies of sexual function ever conducted in young women following cancer," said lead author Lena Wettergren, a professor in care sciences at Uppsala University in Sweden. The study, published Sept. 30 in the journal Acta Oncologica, involved Swedish researchers surveying 694 women ages 18 to 39 about a year and a half after cancer diagnosis. The women had been diagnosed between January 2016 and August 2017 and were...
Vitamin Supplements May Help People With Cystic Fibrosis
3 October 2022
MONDAY, Oct. 3, 2022 (HealthDay News) -- More than 160,000 people around the world have cystic fibrosis, and supplementing with vitamins C and E could help reduce the damaging inflammation in their lungs, according to new research."Cystic fibrosis is a genetic disease that is associated with increased inflammation, and like many inflammatory diseases, it comes with a large amount of oxidative stress," said Maret Traber, a professor at Oregon State College of Public Health and Human Sciences. This new study looked at whether supplementing with high-dose vitamin C would help patients better absorb vitamin E. People with cystic fibrosis also have trouble with fat absorption. This can limit uptake of vitamin E, which is a fat-soluble antioxidant, said Traber. "Low vitamin E levels plus...
Are Your Hands Just Dry, Or Is It Eczema?
2 October 2022
SUNDAY, Oct. 2, 2022 (HealthDay News) -- Sometimes that irritated skin on your hands is more than simple dryness. Hand eczema could be the culprit, with painful dry and itchy skin on all or part of the hand and fingers."If your hands are extremely dry and painful, and using moisturizer throughout the day is not helping to relieve them, you may have hand eczema," said Dr. Dawn Davis, a pediatric and adult dermatologist at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minn. "Without the proper treatment and preventive measures, hand eczema may worsen."Eczema might look like patches of red, dark brown, purple or gray irritated skin, according to the American Academy of Dermatology. It can be scaly, inflamed and itchy. It can feel like it's burning or include itchy blisters and deep, painful cracks, as...
Get Ready for Those Fall Allergies
1 October 2022
SATURDAY, Oct. 1, 2022 (HealthDay News) -- Allergy sufferers know that symptoms don’t just appear in spring or summer. Fall, too, can bring about sneezing and trouble breathing, as can volatile weather patterns.“People frequently experience allergy symptoms in the fall even if they are mainly allergic to pollens in the spring and summer,†said Dr. David Corry. He is a professor of medicine in the section of immunology, allergy and rheumatology at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston.Among the natural events that could affect allergy sufferers this year are the Tonga Volcano eruption in January, Corry said. That sent particulates and aerosols into the environment and could change global weather, shortening or lengthening upcoming pollen seasons. Those seasons could further change...
