Are Retired NFL Players Aging Faster Than Other Men?

Are Retired NFL Players Aging Faster Than Other Men?FRIDAY, Dec. 9, 2022 (HealthDay News) -- Former elite football players may age faster than their more average peers, a new study suggests. NFL players, especially former linemen, had fewer disease-free years and earlier high blood pressure and diabetes diagnoses. Two age-related diseases, arthritis and dementia, were also more commonly found in former football players than in other men of the same age. This research was part of the ongoing Football Players Health Study at Harvard University. "We wanted to know: Are professional football players being robbed of their middle age? Our findings suggest that football prematurely weathers them and puts them on an alternate aging trajectory, increasing the prevalence of a variety of diseases of old age," said senior investigator Rachel...

Twins Study Shows Exercise Altering How Genes Behave

Twins Study Shows Exercise Altering How Genes BehaveFRIDAY, Dec. 9, 2022 (HealthDay News) -- One might expect identical twins to have the same health outcomes. But it’s not just genetics that makes a notable difference in their weight and in how their genes behave, according to a new study. Exercise can alter genetic markers of metabolic disease -- any of the diseases or disorders that disrupt normal metabolism. The study could help explain exercise's key role in health.“The findings provide a molecular mechanism for the link between physical activity and metabolic disease,” explained study co-author Michael Skinner, a biologist at Washington State University, in Pullman. Scientists have previously found that a majority of identical twins develop different diseases as they get older, even though they have the same genes....

Your Dog`s Behavior Is in Its DNAFRIDAY, Dec. 9, 2022 (HealthDay News) -- Is your pooch a herder or a hunter? You can try taking them to a trainer, but new research shows much of their behavior is hardwired in their DNA.For the new study, researchers analyzed DNA samples from more than 200 dog breeds and surveyed 46,000 pet-owners to try to suss out why certain breeds act the way they do.“The largest, most successful genetic experiment that humans have ever done is the creation of 350 dog breeds,” said senior study author Elaine Ostrander, founder of the Dog Genome Project at the National Human Genome Research Institute (NHGRI). “We needed dogs to herd, we needed them to guard, we needed them to help us hunt, and our survival was intimately dependent on that.”But identification of the genes underlying dog...

Just Being Healthy Might Prevent Many Cases of Crohn`s, ColitisTHURSDAY, Dec. 8, 2022 (HealthDay News) -- Folks who follow a handful of healthy habits can dramatically reduce their risk of developing an inflammatory bowel disease, a new study reports.Adopting and maintaining a healthy lifestyle can prevent up to 60% of cases of Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis, according to research published Dec. 6 in the journal Gut."To our surprise, we found that a substantial proportion of cases could have been prevented by adhering to these lifestyle factors," said senior researcher Dr. Hamed Khalili, a gastroenterologist at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston.Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) affects more than 3 million adults in the United States, researchers said in background notes. Symptoms can include diarrhea, abdominal pain, cramping and...

Even Early-Stage Liver Disease May Be Harming the Heart

Even Early-Stage Liver Disease May Be Harming the HeartMONDAY, Dec. 12, 2022 (HealthDay News) -- Liver disease can affect heart health and that includes even early forms of the disease, a new study reveals. While it had previously been known that nonalcoholic fatty liver disease was associated with cardiovascular death, the relationship was poorly understood, said researcher Dr. Alan Kwan. He is a cardiologist and cardiac imaging researcher in Cedars-Sinai Medical Center’s Smidt Heart Institute, in Los Angeles. The relationship may also have been partly obscured by risk factors the two diseases often have in common, such as diabetes. In this study, researchers compared scores of a marker for liver fibrosis (FIB-4 scores) that can indicate risk of developing severe liver disease. The investigators compared these FIB-4 scores with heart...

Vitamin D Might Help Shield the Aging Brain

Vitamin D Might Help Shield the Aging BrainTHURSDAY, Dec. 8, 2022 (HealthDay News) -- Older adults who harbor more vitamin D in their brains may stay mentally sharper, a new study suggests.Researchers found that when older adults had higher levels of vitamin D in their brain tissue, they tended to perform better on standard tests of memory and thinking. They were also less likely to have dementia or milder cognitive impairments.Experts stressed that the study does not prove that vitamin D, itself, protects against dementia -- a complex brain disease that has many contributors. And no one should start downing supplements based on the findings, they said. For one, too much vitamin D can be harmful. And the study did not assess how much vitamin D participants were actually getting day to day."We have no evidence that getting more...
