AHA News: Days Before Christmas, New Mom Had a Stroke
THURSDAY, Dec. 22, 2022 (American Heart Association News) -- Two months after giving birth and a week before Christmas 2016, Ashley Hammontree was enjoying a snowy day at home in Greenwood, Missouri. Wearing pajamas, she nursed her baby, Elijah, and set him in a swing. Her husband, Ryan, came inside from playing with their dogs. He made two mugs of hot chocolate while Ashley mulled over what movie to watch. For the Hammontrees, celebrating the holidays at home with their newborn was especially momentous because of all Ashley went through to get pregnant. Over four years, she'd undergone nine fertility treatments. When Ryan put a warm mug in Ashley's right hand, she dropped it."I don't know what happened. I don't feel good," she said. She bent over to pick up the cup and passed out. Ryan,...
Tough New Labeling Law for Sesame Prompts Companies to...
22 December 2022
THURSDAY, Dec. 22, 2022 (HealthDay News) -- Call it a good idea that seems to have backfired: A tough new labeling law that requires even the smallest amount of sesame be listed on food products has instead spurred some companies to add it to their products. The new federal law goes into effect on Jan. 1, adding sesame to the list of major allergens that must appear on food labels when they are present in the product. Allergens that have appeared on labels since 2004 are milk, eggs, fish, shellfish, tree nuts, peanuts, wheat and soybeans, the Associated Press reported.Food allergen labeling advocates have sought to add sesame to the list of major allergens for years. But the new requirements are so strict that it costs less to add sesame to food products than to try to keep it out of...
Gene Therapy Breakthrough Helps Children Born Without...
22 December 2022
THURSDAY, Dec. 22, 2022 (HealthDay News) -- Ten children with an especially rare and hard-to-treat form of "bubble boy" disease are living normal lives after receiving a new gene therapy approach, researchers say.Experts said the findings are a major advance for children with the disease -- a subtype of severe combined immunodeficiency (SCID).SCID refers to a group of rare genetic diseases that cause babies to be born without a functioning immune system. It became widely known as "bubble boy" disease in the 1970s and '80s, due to the case of David Vetter, a boy with SCID who lived in a plastic, germ-free bubble for 12 years. There are different forms of SCID, based on which gene mutations are involved, but all render the body unable to produce normal B cells and T cells -- critical...
Stop Screening Asymptomatic Hospital Patients for COVID,...
22 December 2022
THURSDAY, Dec. 22, 2022 (HealthDay News) -- A nationwide group of infection control experts recommends U.S. health care facilities stop testing patients for COVID-19 before hospital admission or scheduled surgeries if they have no virus symptoms. The Society for Healthcare Epidemiology of America (SHEA) statement says facilities should rely instead on enhanced layers of infection prevention.“The small benefits that could come from asymptomatic testing at this stage in the pandemic are overridden by potential harms from delays in procedures, delays in patient transfers and strains on laboratory capacity and personnel,†said Dr. Thomas Talbot. He is chief hospital epidemiologist at Vanderbilt University Medical Center in Nashville, Tenn., and a member of SHEA's Board of Directors....
Cluster Headaches May Be Tougher for Women
22 December 2022
THURSDAY, Dec. 22, 2022 (HealthDay News) -- Cluster headaches are more common in men, but may be more severe for women, according to a new study.Researchers surveyed almost 900 patients diagnosed with cluster headache -- short-lasting but extremely painful headaches that can occur many days or even weeks in a row. The survey asked about symptoms, medications, headache triggers and lifestyle habits."Cluster headache is still often misdiagnosed in women, perhaps because some aspects can be similar to migraine," said study co-author Andrea Belin, a neuroscientist with the Karolinska Institute in Stockholm, Sweden. "It is important for physicians to be aware of how the disorder manifests differently in men and women so the most effective treatment can be given as fast as possible," Belin...
Diabetes Med Ozempic in Short Supply as Americans Use It for Weight Loss
21 December 2022
WEDNESDAY, Dec. 21, 2022 (HealthDay News) -- Elon Musk swears by the weight-loss drug Wegovy, and Kim Kardashian is rumored to have used it to shed 16 pounds in three weeks to squeeze into a vintage gown once worn by Marylin Monroe. But the intense public demand for Wegovy has triggered a shortage of the diabetes version of the injectable medication, known as Ozempic. That's leaving patients with the blood sugar disease in a real bind.Made by Novo Nordisk, semaglutide (Ozempic) has been on the market since 2017 to help manage type 2 diabetes. But in June 2021, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration approved semaglutide to treat weight loss under the brand name Wegovy.Ever since Wegovy arrived on the market, Novo Nordisk has struggled to meet demand, experts said.Unfortunately, people who...
U.S. to Release Flu Meds From National Stockpile to Ease Shortages
21 December 2022
WEDNESDAY, Dec. 21, 2022 (HealthDay News) -- Having trouble finding influenza meds at your local pharmacy? You're not alone. Now, flu-infected patients will have better access to prescription medicines as the U.S. government releases doses of Tamiflu from the Strategic National Stockpile. The Biden administration announced Wednesday it will release an unspecified number of doses to U.S. states as the country deals with an early and challenging flu season, the Associated Press reported. About 150,000 people have been hospitalized with flu in the United States this season, and 9,300 have died, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.States will be able to request Tamiflu from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, which oversees the CDC. The antiviral...
