Postpartum Anxiety: What It Is, Symptoms and Treatments
MONDAY, March 13, 2023 (HealthDay News) -- You may have heard of postpartum depression and “the baby blues,†but did you know that there’s another widely studied mental health condition called postpartum anxiety?Dr. Erica Newlin, an obstetrician-gynecologist in Westlake, Ohio, said in a Cleveland Clinic podcast that, “Peripartum and postpartum anxiety and depression, and just mental health concerns in general, are super, super common. Most studies really cite a prevalence of around 10%. But we think that that might be vastly underreported."And postpartum anxiety doesn’t just affect mothers: A recent review published in the Journal of Psychosomatic Obstetrics & Gynecology revealed that about 1 in 10 dads were impacted. To understand how to better manage postpartum anxiety and...
Having A-Fib Might Raise Odds for Dementia
13 March 2023
MONDAY, March 13, 2023 (HealthDay News) -- The common irregular heartbeat known as atrial fibrillation (a-fib) may increase the risk of dementia, a new study suggests.Researchers found that people newly diagnosed with a-fib had a 13% higher risk of developing dementia, the progressive loss of memory and thinking skills. The risk was even higher (65%) among those who developed a-fib before age 65 and in people who did not have chronic kidney disease (20%)."The health consequences of atrial fibrillation may be broader than originally recognized in certain individuals," said lead researcher Dr. Nisha Bansal, a professor of medicine at the University of Washington, in Seattle. "A personalized approach is needed to help inform patients of the consequences of their atrial fibrillation."A-fib...
New Nasal Spray for Migraines Approved by FDA
13 March 2023
MONDAY, March 13, 2023 (HealthDay News) – Migraine sufferers will soon have a new treatment option that works more quickly and may be safer for people at risk of heart attack or stroke. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has approved Pfizer Inc.’s zavegepant (Zavzpret), a nasal spray meant to treat severe headache pain, the company announced Friday.“The FDA approval of Zavzpret marks a significant breakthrough for people with migraine who need freedom from pain and prefer alternative options to oral medications,†Angela Hwang, chief commercial officer and president of Pfizer's global biopharmaceuticals business, said in a company news release. “Zavzpret underscores Pfizer’s commitment to delivering an additional treatment option to help people with migraine gain relief...
Chest Scans for Respiratory Ills Can Also Spot Heart Trouble
13 March 2023
MONDAY, March 13, 2023 (HealthDay News) -- Ordering special heart scans before a major surgery to gauge risks may be unnecessary, a new study suggests.Researchers found that surgeons can instead estimate patients’ risk of heart attack or death by reviewing existing images of the chest captured months earlier during screening for lung issues, such as pneumonia or cancer. This could avoid surgery delays and increased costs, while reducing radiation exposure. For the study, a team from NYU Grossman School of Medicine in New York City analyzed existing computed tomography (CT) scans to estimate levels of hardened fatty plaque deposits in the heart’s three largest blood vessels. They found that patients with greater plaque buildup had higher odds for developing serious health issues...
CBD Oil Won't Ease Pain After Kidney Stone Treatment
13 March 2023
MONDAY, March 13, 2023 (HealthDay News) -- An approved CBD oil product will, apparently, not be the solution for patients trying to reduce pain after kidney stone treatment, a randomized clinical trial suggests."Urologists and patients alike are interested in finding effective alternatives to pain management after urinary stone treatment," said senior study author Dr. Karen Stern, a urologist at the Mayo Clinic in Phoenix, Ariz. "Our study found that although treatment with CBD oil was safe, it wasn't effective in minimizing pain or opioid use after ureteroscopy and stent placement."For the study, researchers tested the cannabidiol (CBD) oil product in 90 patients who were undergoing the treatment for urinary stones. CBD is a non-psychoactive component of cannabis.Urinary stones in the...
How to Help Your Child Deal With Separation Anxiety
13 March 2023
MONDAY, March 13, 2023 (HealthDay News) – For some children, it can be hard when mom or dad leave them at daycare, school or even just with the other parent. It’s normal for small children to feel some separation anxiety. But it can be more concerning when a child doesn’t outgrow these feelings or feels them very intensely. This significant fear is known as Separation Anxiety Disorder (SAD). “It’s rare that separation anxiety persists on a daily basis after the preschool years. If you’re concerned that your child isn’t adapting to being without you, chat with the pediatrician,†Dr. Wendy Sue Swanson, a member of the American Academy of Pediatrics Council on Communications and Media, suggested in a story about separation anxiety for the American Academy of Pediatrics...
Parents, Plan Now for Allergy-Free Summer Camp
12 March 2023
SUNDAY, March 12, 2023 (HealthDay News) -- Planning for a safe summer camp experience requires some extra steps if your child has asthma or allergies. An allergy expert noted that it's a huge concern for parents.“Most kids heading off to summer camp for the first time wonder how they’ll cope sleeping in a cabin with 10 other kids, if they’ll make friends, and what exactly is in the bug juice,†said allergist Dr. Kathleen May, president of the American College of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology (ACAAI). “Meanwhile, parents of kids with allergies and asthma are wondering if the camp is prepared to handle an emergency situation should one arise," May said in a college news release.ACAAI offered some tips for a safe camp experience:Consider a camp focused on kids with food...
For Seniors on Antidepressants, Adding a Drug May Work Better Than Switching
10 March 2023
FRIDAY, March 10, 2023 (HealthDay News) -- Many older adults with depression don’t respond to their first antidepressant, so doctors will switch them to another one to see if that does the trick. Now, new research suggests that the best strategy for these folks may instead be to add the antipsychotic drug Abilify (aripiprazole) to the original antidepressant.“This is good news for older adults with difficult-to-treat depression,†said study author Dr. Eric Lenze, head of the department of psychiatry at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis. “Adding a second medication produces improvements in psychological well-being [e.g., positive mood, life satisfaction] and, often, remission from depression, and these improvements are greater than switching...
