Weight-Loss Surgery May Lower Colon Cancer Risk

Weight-Loss Surgery May Lower Colon Cancer RiskTHURSDAY, March 12, 2020 (HealthDay News) -- Obesity increases the risk for colon cancer, but weight-loss surgery may bring the risk back to normal, French researchers report. People who are obese have a 34% higher risk of colon cancer than the general population, but any type of bariatric (weight-loss) surgery can bring their risk back in line, according to the authors of a new study. "People aged 50 to 75 are particularly concerned by the risk of developing a colorectal cancer, and all of them should undergo a screening test regularly," said lead researcher Dr. Laurent Bailly of the Centre Hospitalier Universitaire de Nice. "For individuals with obesity, aged 50 to 75 years, our observational study has shown that bariatric surgery is associated with a decreased risk of...

Bacteria May Be a Player in Diabetes Among Very Obese

12 March 2020
Bacteria May Be a Player in Diabetes Among Very ObeseTHURSDAY, March 12, 2020 (HealthDay News) -- Bacteria may play a role in the development of type 2 diabetes in severely obese people, researchers report. They analyzed bacterial genetic material in blood and tissue samples taken from 40 severely obese people during weight-loss surgery. Half of the patients had type 2 diabetes, while the other half showed insulin resistance but didn't have diabetes. The blood, liver and certain abdominal fat deposits from those with diabetes had a different bacterial signature from those without diabetes. The Canadian researchers also found that the total number of bacteria varied from one tissue to another, and was highest in the liver and the greater omentum (a fatty tissue connecting the stomach and the transverse colon). These two areas play an...

Rising Number of Older Americans at Risk of Vision Loss

12 March 2020
Rising Number of Older Americans at Risk of Vision LossTHURSDAY, March 12, 2020 (HealthDay News) -- As the population ages, millions of older Americans are at risk of losing their sight, a new study warns. Between 2002 and 2017, the number at high risk for vision loss rose from 65 million to 93 million, according to federal health data. "The number of adults at high risk for vision loss is high and may continue to increase in the coming years with the increasing population of adults over 65 years and prevalence of diabetes," said study lead author Sharon Saydah. She's a senior scientist at the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. "While the percent of adults at high risk for vision loss who receive eye care services has increased, disparities in eye care services by education level and poverty status persisted over time,"...

AHA News: How Anti-Gay Attitudes Hurt Teen Fitness

AHA News: How Anti-Gay Attitudes Hurt Teen FitnessTHURSDAY, March 12, 2020 (American Heart Association News) -- Sofia Flynn is exceptional in many ways. The 17-year-old from Chevy Chase, Maryland, already works as an emergency medical technician and does data analysis in a research lab. She has her sights set on medical school and a career in psychiatry. And she works out regularly, in a gym and in dance class. That last item puts Flynn, a high school junior who identifies as bisexual, in a distinct minority among American teenagers overall, and among non-heterosexual youths in particular. About 29% of high school students in 2017 said they got the recommended hour a day of aerobic activity, according to statistics published recently by the American Heart Association. But only half that many students who are gay, lesbian or bisexual...

Vaping Videos Soaring on YouTube

12 March 2020
Vaping Videos Soaring on YouTubeTHURSDAY, March 12, 2020 (HealthDay News) -- YouTube is awash in misleading videos touting the safety of tobacco and vaping, a new study finds. Researchers found that from 2013 to 2019, views of smoking-themed YouTube videos dramatically increased, particularly those with instructions on vaping. "The easy access of such [video] material suggests that YouTube is a fertile environment for the promotion of tobacco products despite its banning of tobacco advertising," said researchers from the Annenberg Public Policy Center (APPC) of the University of Pennsylvania. Looking at videos displayed in 2019, the authors found one on "the art of vape" had more than 40 million views -- more than 68,000 a day. In 2013, the most-viewed pro-tobacco video was on using a pipe, with more than...

Finding Signs of Impending Health Trouble in Facebook Postings

12 March 2020
Finding Signs of Impending Health Trouble in Facebook PostingsTHURSDAY, March 12, 2020 (HealthDay News) -- Could clues to future health emergencies be found in Facebook posts? Maybe so, according to a new study that discovered there are changes in users' posts before they seek emergency care. For the study, researchers analyzed the Facebook posts and medical records of more than 2,900 patients at a U.S. urban hospital, including 419 who'd had a recent emergency department visit for problems ranging from chest pain to pregnancy-related issues. Analysis of Facebook posts from as early as 2.5 months before those patients' emergency visits revealed that most had changes in their language before seeking emergency care. Specifically, they were less likely to post about leisure or use words like "play," "fun" and "nap," and less likely to use...

The annual decline was slightly larger among men (1.8%) than women (1.4%), according to the Annual Report to the Nation on the Status of Cancer. The report is prepared by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention; the U.S. National Cancer Institute; the American Cancer Society, and the North American Association of Central Cancer Registries. "The United States continues to make significant progress in cancer prevention, early detection, and treatment," said CDC director Dr. Robert Redfield. "While we are encouraged that overall cancer death rates have decreased, there is still much more we can do to prevent...
