Why Are Teens, Millennials Ignoring Coronavirus Warnings?

Why Are Teens, Millennials Ignoring Coronavirus Warnings?THURSDAY, March 26, 2020 (HealthDay News) -- In what can only be described as the stupidity of youth, at least one young person in Kentucky has been infected with COVID-19 after taking part in a "coronavirus party." The revelers got together "thinking they were invincible" and purposely defied state guidance to practice social distancing, Kentucky Gov. Andy Beshear said Tuesday. "This is one that makes me mad," Beshear told CNN. "We have to be much better than that." But the nonchalance of youth that has been exhibited during the coronavirus pandemic doesn't stop there: news reports have shown young adults and teens packing beaches and bars for spring break, ignoring public health officials' pleas to practice social distancing, and acting as if the world isn't in the throes of a...

Severe COVID-19 Might Injure the Heart

Severe COVID-19 Might Injure the HeartTHURSDAY, March 26, 2020 (HealthDay News) -- The new coronavirus may be a respiratory bug, but it's becoming clear that some severely ill patients sustain heart damage. And it may substantially raise their risk of death, doctors in China are reporting. They found that among 416 patients hospitalized for severe COVID-19 infections, almost 20% developed damage to the heart muscle. More than half of those patients died. Doctors in China have already warned that heart injuries appear common in COVID-19 patients, particularly those with existing heart disease or high blood pressure. A recent study found that 12% of hospitalized patients had the complication. These latest findings, from a team led by Dr. Bo Yang of Renmin Hospital of Wuhan University, and published March 25 in JAMA...

Could Viagra, Cialis Work Largely by Placebo Effect?

Could Viagra, Cialis Work Largely by Placebo Effect?THURSDAY, March 26, 2020 (HealthDay News) -- Until the discovery of Viagra, men with erectile dysfunction were largely left with the impression that their sexual problems were all in their head. That might still be somewhat true, even in this age of little blue pills, a new paper argues. A good number of men receiving a placebo in clinical trials for erectile dysfunction drugs experienced an improvement in their function, researchers said in a report published online March 20 in JAMA Network Open. This placebo effect was most pronounced in men with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), suggesting that for some men psychology is more important than physiology in dealing with erectile dysfunction, said lead researcher Alexander Stridh of the Karolinska Institute's department of...

Shelter Animals Need Your Help During the Pandemic

Shelter Animals Need Your Help During the PandemicTHURSDAY, March 26, 2020 (HealthDay News) -- Fostering a shelter animal during the coronavirus pandemic could benefit both of you, an animal welfare group says. "Shelters are swamped in the best of times, and with more and more staff in every sector of American life self-quarantining and falling ill, animals already abandoned and without homes are going to be increasingly vulnerable," said Robin Ganzert, president and CEO of American Humane. "At the same time, so many of us, especially the elderly, are coping with the loneliness, stress and anxiety that comes with isolation and the sheltering in place so necessary during a pandemic," she said in an organization news release. "Why be home alone when you can snuggle up with a loving new buddy? You might save a life, improve your own...

An Expert's Guide to Fact-Checking Coronavirus Info Online

26 March 2020
An Expert`s Guide to Fact-Checking Coronavirus Info OnlineTHURSDAY, March 26, 2020 (HealthDay News) -- With bogus information about the new coronavirus spreading fast online, how can you separate fact from fiction? A communications expert at Virginia Tech in Blacksburg said identifying reliable and useful sources of information is key. Here's her advice: "Be skeptical of social media posts about the COVID-19 virus, even those that have the superficial look of news items, and check their sources and accuracy," said Adrienne Ivory, associate professor of communication at Virginia Tech. "If you are not sure whether a source of information can be trusted, check multiple news sources to see if the information is consistent across them." Always check social media claims about coronavirus prevention and treatment against official sources such...

Livestock, Poultry Safe From Coronavirus: Expert

26 March 2020
Livestock, Poultry Safe From Coronavirus: ExpertTHURSDAY, March 26, 2020 (HealthDay News) -- In a bit of good news about the novel coronavirus, one expert says it looks like livestock and poultry don't appear to be at risk from COVID-19. The coronavirus most likely jumped from an animal species into humans and mutated into a virus that mostly affects people, said Jim Roth, director of the Center for Food Security and Public Health at Iowa State University. "If livestock were getting the virus and getting sick we'd most likely know that from what's gone on in other countries," Roth said in a university news release. "It does seem to be pretty species-specific to people," said Roth, a professor of veterinary microbiology and preventive medicine. Researchers are examining the possibility that livestock might develop minor...

Coronavirus Isn't Even 'Alive,' But Expert Explains How It Can Harm

26 March 2020
Coronavirus Isn`t Even `Alive,` But Expert Explains How It Can HarmTHURSDAY, March 26, 2020 (HealthDay News) -- It has spread across the globe in just a few short months, sickening hundreds of thousands, but the new coronavirus has the dubious distinction of not really being a living organism, biologists say. "Viruses aren't considered alive -- in class, I call them pseudo-alive," said Eric Mendenhall, an associate professor of biological sciences at the University of Alabama in Huntsville. "They require a host to even begin to function. However, since they use DNA or RNA to pass information to the next round of viruses the cell makes for them, they are subject to some of the same principles of evolution and selection that alive organisms are subject to," he explained in a university news release. "A virus usually enters the cell through a protein...

Wuhan Study Shows How Social Distancing Is Saving Lives

26 March 2020
Wuhan Study Shows How Social Distancing Is Saving LivesTHURSDAY, March 26, 2020 (HealthDay News) -- In a lesson for what can be achieved with social distancing, researchers report that school and workplace closures in Wuhan, China, reduced the number of coronavirus cases there. And officials are extending those measures until April now instead of March, which could hold off a second wave of cases until later this year, the researchers noted. Experts say there are vital lessons in the Wuhan experience for the United States and other countries around the world. "The unprecedented measures the city of Wuhan has put in place to reduce social contacts in school and the workplace have helped to control the outbreak," said study leader Kiesha Prem, from the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine, in England. "However, the city now needs...
