Why Teens Find It Tough to Social Distance

Why Teens Find It Tough to Social DistanceSUNDAY, April 5, 2020 (HealthDay News) -- Parenting a teenager can be an emotional minefield in the best of times, but the social distancing of the coronavirus pandemic could really strain young people's mental health. Teens and young adults who are confined to home during the coronavirus pandemic face numerous disappointments, including not being able to hang out with friends, missing out on new life experiences and trying to manage their time, a mental health expert says. This age group may not understand the importance of social distancing. Parents can help teens and young adults appreciate the need to do so by directing them to reliable sources of information, such as the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, said Ann Murphy, director of the Northeast and Caribbean...

CDC Urges All Americans to Wear Face MasksSATURDAY, April 4, 2020 (HealthDay News) -- The White House announced new guidance on Friday that urges all Americans to wear face coverings in public to curb the spread of COVID-19. As President Donald Trump told the American public about the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommendation during a coronavirus task force briefing, he noted he will not be following it, The New York Times reported. "With the masks, it is going to be a voluntary thing," Trump said. "You can do it. You don't have to do it. I am choosing not to do it. It may be good. It is only a recommendation, voluntary." These face coverings can be non-medical masks, T-shirts or bandanas and they can be used while out at everyday shopping spots such as the grocery store, pharmacy or gas station, the...

Going Easy on Yourself Is Key to Parenting Through the PandemicSATURDAY, April 4, 2020 (HealthDay News) -- The coronavirus pandemic has caught many American families in a vise. Many parents are struggling to work from home and meet the needs of kids who are out of school and chaffing under what some consider house arrest. "It can be easy to fall into the trap of self-blame when children are fighting, and workdays aren't going as planned," said Kathryn Boger, director of the Anxiety Mastery Program at McLean Hospital in Belmont, Mass. Boger urged parents to go easy on themselves. Head off self-punishing thoughts and repeat mini-mantras throughout the day, she suggested, such as "This is not the time for perfection" and "I'm doing the best I can in a really tough situation." It's also important to accept what you can and can't control, Boger...

A Consistent Bedtime Is Good for Your Heart

A Consistent Bedtime Is Good for Your HeartFRIDAY, April 3, 2020 (HealthDay News) -- In the age of TV marathons, sticking to a consistent bedtime can be a challenge, but new research shows it could help reduce your risk of heart problems. For the study, the researchers assessed the link between a regular bedtime and resting heart rate, and found that people who went to bed later or earlier than normal had a higher resting heart rate. "We already know an increase in resting heart rate means an increased risk to cardiovascular health," said study lead author Nitesh Chawla, a professor of computer science and engineering at the University of Notre Dame in Indiana. "Through our study, we found that even if you get seven hours of sleep a night, if you're not going to bed at the same time each night, not only does your resting...

Mental Health Problems After First Baby Reduce Likelihood of More Children: StudyFRIDAY, April 3, 2020 (HealthDay News) -- Women who develop mental health problems after delivering their first child are much less likely to have more, a Danish study finds. But this is not the case among women whose first child died. For the study, researchers analyzed data on more than 414,000 women in Denmark who had a first live birth between 1997 and 2015. About 1% developed problems such as depression, anxiety, mania and schizophrenia within six months after the birth. Sixty-nine percent of these women went on to have a second child, compared to 82% of mothers who had no mental health issues after their first live birth, the investigators found. Study leader Xiaoqin Liu said researchers need to figure out why 31% of mothers who had postpartum mental health issues did not...

ER Workers` Stress May Affect Patient Care: StudyFRIDAY, April 3, 2020 (HealthDay News) -- The COVID-19 pandemic has added to already high stress levels in emergency rooms, a social psychologist says. "ER providers are on the front line of this pandemic, and stress, anxiety and anger are increasing," said Linda Isbell, a professor of psychology at University of Massachusetts Amherst. "As we all face anxiety about the fallout of this pandemic, anger about a health care system that was already stretched thin and under-resourced is likely to grow," she explained in a university news release. Isbell's team interviewed 45 doctors and 41 nurses who offered mixed feelings about life in the ER. Persistent issues such as understaffing, overcrowding and limited resources for homeless and mentally ill patients elicited overwhelmingly...

How Pets Can Be True Lifesavers for Seniors

How Pets Can Be True Lifesavers for SeniorsFRIDAY, April 3, 2020 (HealthDay News) -- Having a furry, fluffy or feathered friend can have a profound effect on seniors' mental health, possibly even helping prevent some suicides, new research suggests. In a group of 35 older people who were pet owners, more than one-third said they were "actively suicidal" or "significantly traumatized," but their pets gave them a reason to live. One of these men had dogs and exotic birds with very specialized care needs. "I actually realized the only thing that is really keeping me alive, was these [dogs] and the birds, giving me a chance to get out of bed in the morning," he said. "[My wife] would not feed them; she refused to feed them, so I had to get out of bed, and do something, all right? Otherwise, I would be asleep for 20 to 22...

Asthma, COPD Raise Odds for Severe COVID-19, Lung Experts WarnFRIDAY, April 3, 2020 (HealthDay News) -- People with asthma and other lung diseases are at increased risk for serious complications from COVID-19, caution experts from the American Lung Association. "Everyone's health is at risk from COVID-19, and those living with a lung disease or who are immunocompromised may be more vulnerable to the impacts of the virus," said Dr. Albert Rizzo, the association's chief medical officer. COVID-19 can cause a pneumonia-like lung infection, with a range of symptoms from mild or absent in some to life-threatening in others, he said. It's crucial for people with chronic lung diseases such as asthma or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) to keep taking their maintenance medications and tell their health care provider about any symptoms or...
