Beware of 'Media Overload' During Coronavirus Crisis, Experts Say

Beware of `Media Overload` During Coronavirus Crisis, Experts SayTUESDAY, April 7, 2020 (HealthDay News) -- If you feel like the news about coronavirus is growing worse by the hour, then it might be time to take stock: How much do you really need to know? As the pandemic unfolds, and people routinely wake up to uncertainty, it is necessary to stay informed, psychologists say. At the same time, they caution, remember that media overload is real. And it may raise anxiety to a level that does more harm than good. "The data show that the harm does not come from staying informed in a reasonable way -- like reading your morning paper every day," said Dana Rose Garfin, an assistant adjunct professor at the University of California, Irvine's School of Nursing. And in the midst of a pandemic, she pointed out, a little worry is normal and...

You're Wearing a Face Mask -- Are You Wearing It Correctly?

You`re Wearing a Face Mask -- Are You Wearing It Correctly?TUESDAY, April 7, 2020 (HealthDay News) -- A cloth mask can help reduce the spread of COVID-19, but there's a right way and a wrong way to wear one. Used incorrectly, such masks could put you and others at risk, according to doctors at University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston. And remember: Masks are only a supplement -- not a replacement -- for such precautions as avoiding contact with other people and staying at home. The best way to protect against COVID-19 is social distancing, washing your hands often, and only leaving your home for essential errands. The coronavirus is spread through airborne droplets, which can travel up to 6 feet and even farther if you cough or sneeze. "Many respiratory viruses, COVID-19 likely included, can infect you through multiple...

What Material Is Best for Your DIY Face Mask? The Answer May Surprise YouTUESDAY, April 7, 2020 (HealthDay News) -- What's the best material for a do-it-yourself face mask? Yang Wang, an assistant professor of environmental engineering at Missouri University of Science and Technology, has some suggestions based on initial testing. He investigated how a few common household materials -- such as pillowcases, scarves and furnace filters -- filtered out aerosols. The new coronavirus may survive for a few hours on airborne aerosols and is also spread through larger droplets from a cough or a sneeze. It turns out that makeshift masks made by layering scarves and bandannas did a poor job of filtering out aerosols. Pillowcase fabric was somewhat better, depending on thread count. A 600-count pillowcase filters better than a 400-count one, Wang pointed out. But...

As U.S. Coronavirus Death Toll Nears 11,000, Signs Show Pandemic May Be PeakingTUESDAY, April 7, 2020 (HealthDay News) With U.S. deaths from coronavirus approaching 11,000 on Tuesday, signs emerged suggesting the pandemic might be peaking, experts say. New York state saw lower totals of new coronavirus patients in hospitals for the fourth day in a row, and a new modeling forecast released Monday painted a slightly more positive picture of how the pandemic will play out in the United States. On Sunday, President Donald Trump and his advisers predicted parts of the country were about to reach their respective peaks of COVID-19 cases, the Washington Post reported. While hailing a one-day decline in deaths in New York City, Trump warned that New York and New Jersey have "really become a very hot zone." Earlier on Sunday, U.S. Surgeon General Jerome Adams was more...

Why Will It Take So Long for a COVID-19 Vaccine?

6 April 2020
Why Will It Take So Long for a COVID-19 Vaccine?MONDAY, April 6, 2020 (HealthDay News) -- Public health officials have been warning that a COVID-19 vaccine will not be available to the public for 12 to 18 months, dampening hopes that there will be a quick end to the global pandemic nightmare. But Chinese researchers cracked the virus' genetic code within weeks of its emergence late last year, and two vaccine candidates are already in early human trials -- one in China and the other in the United States. What's the hold up? Essentially, you can speed up the vaccine development process to respond to a pandemic, but you don't want to speed it up so much that you allow a bad vaccine to enter the market, explained Dr. Greg Poland, director of the Mayo Clinic's Vaccine Research Group. "The process of developing, testing and licensing...

U.K. Prime Minister Boris Johnson in ICU With COVID-19MONDAY, April 6, 2020 (HealthDay News) -- British Prime Minister Boris Johnson has been moved to intensive care at St. Thomas' Hospital in London as his condition deteriorated after infection with the novel coronavirus. According to The New York Times, Johnson, 55, had tweeted from hospital on Monday that he was "in good spirits." Foreign Secretary Dominic Raab, who was standing in for Johnson, added that the prime minister was working from bed and was still "in charge" of the government. However, Raab has admitted that he has not spoken to Johnson since Saturday, and commentators in the U.K. have expressed concern that the prime minister's COVID-19 symptoms have persisted for 10 days since his diagnosis on March 26. According to the Times, there are reports that Johnson received...

Pilates May Be Good Medicine for High Blood Pressure

6 April 2020
Pilates May Be Good Medicine for High Blood PressureMONDAY, April 6, 2020 (HealthDay News) -- Pilates exercises can do more than help strengthen your abs -- the moves may also lower high blood pressure and reduce artery stiffness, new research suggests. Pilates is a workout program that focuses on core strength, flexibility, body posture and controlled breathing. The new study included 28 obese women, aged 19 to 27, with high blood pressure ("hypertension"). The participants were non-smokers, had no chronic diseases, and did less than 90 minutes of regular exercise a week. For the study, half of the women completed 12 weeks of mat Pilates sessions supervised by a certified instructor. The other 14 women made up a non-exercising control group. The women in the Pilates group did three one-hour sessions a week, which included 10...

Americans Got the Memo on Social Distancing, Poll ShowsMONDAY, April 6, 2020 (HealthDay News) -- Americans have gotten the message on the importance of social distancing in stemming the coronavirus pandemic, a new poll shows. Conducted by the Associated Press-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research, the survey found that 94% of Americans say they are staying away from large groups, up from 68% six weeks ago. Eighty-six percent now say they are avoiding other people as much as possible. Currently, half of Americans say they are extremely or very worried that they or a family member will be infected by the virus. That compares with 22% who said so in February. Another 34% are somewhat worried, the survey showed. That worry is translating into concrete actions: Ninety-two percent of Americans now say they are washing their hands more...
