Certified Nurse Midwives Help with Much More Than OB Needs

In her own words, Certified Nurse Midwife Jessica Schock addresses some of the common misconceptions about the profession.

Jessica Schock, CNM“Mid*wife*? But can a man be a midwife too?”

I can't tell you how many times I have heard this question, mostly from the men in the delivery room.

All kidding aside, the word "Midwife" comes from Middle English and means "with" (mid) "woman" (wife).

Just thinking about the name of our position really explains our career, and our passion.

Midwives come in a few different forms, but the Midwives at F.F. Thompson Hospital are Certified Nurse Midwives (CNMs). This means we were initially Registered Nurses and then completed graduate degrees and board certification to practice Midwifery.

Midwives can do many different things in women's health; in our medical group, you can choose to see a Midwife for your routine gynecologic or obstetric care. We see patients from adolescence all the way through the postmenopausal period in the office, provide obstetric care to our own patients, manage labors, and catch babies during vaginal deliveries. If you need a cesarean section, we assist our physician partners in surgery.

One of my favorite parts of our practice is the benefit that all of our patients (and the providers) get from our CNM/MD team approach. There's always someone here for the care you need.

Oh....and....men can be Midwives too.
