New Designations and Soon, New Technology

QUALITY AND SAFETY

Two general surgeons from Thompson Health Advanced Surgical Services were recently designated by the independent, nonprofit Surgical Review Corporation (SRC) as Master  Surgeons™ for both hernia surgery and for robotic surgery.

Receiving the distinction means Dr. A. David Peter and Dr. Joseph Talarico maintain and/or exceed a required number of hernia and  robotic surgeries, completed a set level of continuing medical education related to these types of surgeries, and have demonstrated optimal outcomes.

“Thompson and the Finger Lakes region  are fortunate to have both Drs. Peter and Talarico. Their care is unmatched in the region, and this is supported by empirical evidence and certified by an outside agency,” said Thompson Health  Executive Vice President/COO Kurt Koczent.

In 2017, F.F. Thompson became the first in the state to be named a Center of Excellence in Hernia Surgery™ by the SRC, which also named the  hospital a Center of Excellence in Robotic Surgery™.

Minimally-invasive robotic surgery at Thompson will soon advance to the next level for Peter, Talarico, and several other surgeons on the  medical staff when the hospital - which acquired its first da Vinci® surgical system in 2012 – obtains a second later this year.

This latest model of the system enables ENT surgeons to perform  trans-oral surgeries, removing tumors from the jaw, mouth and tongue.

“Currently,” Koczent said, “no other hospital in the Finger Lakes region has this technology.”
