Birthing Center Nurse Receives Thompson’s ‘DAISY’
CANANDAIGUA –Whitney Smith, BSN, RN, is the latest UR Medicine Thompson Health recipient of The DAISY Award for Extraordinary Nurses.
Smith, a resident of Palmyra, has worked in F.F. Thompson Hospital’s Birthing Center since 2016. She was nominated by a patient – a Newark resident who also happens to be a nurse – who gave birth to a daughter last fall and was grateful to Smith for being personable, genuine, and reassuring throughout the three-day stay.
“She never once made me feel stupid and kept putting my mind to ease when I got nervous,” said the patient, describing Smith as having “the best bedside manner I have seen in quite some time.”
The patient, her partner, and their baby were on hand as Smith was surprised with the award while at work on March 20. She received a certificate, a pin, and a hand-carved sculpture called A Healer’s Touch. As a DAISY recipient, she is also eligible for scholarships, discounts on certifications, and medical mission grants from The DAISY Foundation. She is the seventh recipient of Thompson’s quarterly DAISY award, which is part of a nationwide nurse recognition program.
