New, Non-Invasive Rehabilitation Treatment Offered

REHABILITATION

THERE IS GOOD NEWS for people who suffer with restricted mobility or have resigned themselves to live with certain types of chronic pain: The health system’s Rehabilitation Services Department is now offering Active Release Techniques (ART)® soft tissue treatment at its Victor location.

ART is a non-invasive approach that focuses on relieving tissue tension that has built up as a result of injury or repetitive use. According to Carrie Phelps, a Thompson athletic trainer and physical therapy assistant who is certified in lower-extremity ART, this hands-on, movement-based treatment can quickly reduce pain and restore function.

Kiernan Donofrio of Pittsford said ART has been an integral part of her recovery from a recent hip injury and surgery.

“Helping with stretching and releasing muscles, ART has helped me on my road to getting back to running,” Donofrio said, describing Phelps as “very knowledgeable, kind and encouraging” as well as someone who works closely with patients to develop individualized plans that meet their particular needs.

ART benefits can include:

  • Increased flexibility
  • Increased range of motion
  • Decreased lower back pain
  • Management of shin splints
  • Management of plantar fasciitis
  • Improvement of sciatic symptoms

Phelps is able to treat patients without a referral. The first visit is a 60-minute evaluation/assessment, and follow-up sessions last 45 minutes apiece. Phelps said improvement is typically seen after two to three visits.
