Apprentice Information Sessions

How does the CNA training work?

In partnership with Finger Lakes Community College, UR Medicine Thompson Health offers a five-week training course for individuals interested in becoming certified nursing assistants (CNAs) at the CCC.

Thompson Health covers the full tuition, and participants receive payment while taking the class. They are hired into a CNA position at the CCC, where they are expected to remain employed – in a full- or part-time position – for at least one year from certification.

This is a great way to start your career in healthcare.

CNA Apprentice Program

Betty Hughes
Caring was her Calling. It can be yours, too.

While many people become a certified nursing assistant (CNA) with a plan of becoming a nurse - drawn to Thompson Health by its career advancement programs - others find being a CNA to be their calling.

Betty Hughes was one of those people.

A resident of Newark, Betty had worked as a home health aide but was looking for more stability when she first applied to Thompson’s M.M. Ewing Continuing Care Center in 2011. She was hired to work as a CNA, retiring this past September.

Looking back on her career at Thompson, Betty said being a CNA gave her a chance to do what she loves best, and she did it for a living.

“I’m a very compassionate person and I just love helping people. It doesn’t matter what the situation is – I love helping,” she said.

As a CNA, that meant doing whatever she could to meet the needs of residents. Something as simple as getting someone ice cream or a cup of coffee made a difference, as did taking a few minutes to “chit chat.”

“I would ask them, ‘How’s your day going?’ or ‘How are you feeling?’ or ‘How’s your family?’” she said. “That’s really, really important.”

While being a CNA is hard work and can have its share of challenges, Betty is glad it’s what she chose to do. After all, she said, “It’s very fulfilling.”

Now that she’s embarking on retirement, she treasures a note she received from one of her residents. The woman let Betty know just how much she would miss her, adding, “I feel blessed for having met and known you, even for this brief part of my life.”

“You have given so much of your time and of yourself, caring for others,” the woman wrote. “I love you. Thank you for being here for me.”
