New Comprehensive Rehabilitation Care Location Taking Shape on South Main Street in Canandaigua
Thompson Health Outpatient Rehabilitation Services is planning a move to a new Canandaigua location in a 14,000-square-foot space at 699 South Main Street.
While it was hoped the move would take place this year, supply chain issues with the heating/cooling unit have pushed it to early 2023. Once work in the space is complete, we will announce an open house and ribbon cutting. The plan is for the event to be held in conjunction with an open house next door at UR Medicine Orthopaedics & Physical Performance, which first opened its doors this past April.
“It’s been exciting to watch the progress of our new physical rehabilitation center. The space is coming along nicely and the community is pleased we are offering full-spectrum orthopaedic care,” said Thompson Health Executive Vice President/COO Kurt Koczent. “Joining forces with the University of Rochester Medical Faculty Group Orthopaedics is an exciting endeavor. At Thompson, we continue to push to provide the highest quality care possible, right here in the Finger Lakes.”
The new Outpatient Rehabilitation Services space is designed to include a comprehensive level of rehabilitation care with physical therapy, occupational therapy, and athletic training as well as lymphedema, hand, and aquatic therapies.
There will be a therapy pool on site and a SafeGait 360° Balance and Mobility Trainer, with a ceiling-mounted weight support and fall-protection system used to practice walking as well as to improve strength and balance. With a monorail-like track, the system is used by a wide range of patients including those with complications from stroke, multiple sclerosis, Parkinson’s disease, amputations, and traumatic brain injuries.
Thompson Health Director of Rehabilitation Services Carole Drake said her team, currently based within Thompson Hospital on Parrish Street, is looking forward to having more room for patient care. Patients, meanwhile, are looking forward to the convenient parking offered at the new location, often referred to by area residents as “the old Wegmans plaza.”
“There is ample parking right outside the door, which will be very much appreciated by patients, especially those who are recovering from an illness or injury and rebuilding their strength,” Carole said.
Our Speech Pathology Team – which is part of Rehabilitation Services – works with both inpatients and outpatients and will remain at the hospital. Our two other outpatient Rehabilitation Services locations will remain open at 1160 Corporate Drive in Farmington and 7670 Omnitech Place in Victor.
Located adjacent to the new Rehabilitation Services space, our Canandaigua Urgent Care opened in 2020. In the spring of 2023, University Urology – currently on Parrish Street – is expected to relocate to a suite within the plaza as well.
