UR Medicine Orthopaedics & Physical Performance: Expanded Services at Thompson

COVER STORY

THOMPSON HEALTH recently strengthened its partnership with UR Medicine Orthopaedics & Physical Performance for expanded inpatient and outpatient orthopaedic care in both Canandaigua and Victor.

“We are excited to collaborate with top-level orthopaedic professionals who enable us to manage the more complex cases right here in Canandaigua,” said President/CEO Michael F. Stapleton, Jr.

“Our orthopaedic patients are offered a full continuum of services by our health system,” Stapleton added. “Patients can be assessed, diagnosed, undergo surgery and complete their rehabilitation, all with Thompson Health and all under a shared medical record system that allows our teams 360° visibility into our patients’ care.”

UR Medicine Orthopaedics & Physical Performance has handled all Emergency Department orthopaedic care at F.F. Thompson Hospital in Canandaigua since Jan. 1 of this year, decreasing the number of unnecessary patient transfers to Rochester. In September, its team increased its presence at Thompson further, performing more surgeries at the hospital.

The UR Medicine orthopaedic surgeons are all fellowship-trained, meaning they have undertaken additional training in an orthopaedic sub-specialty after residency, ensuring access to the latest developments in the field.

“These physicians and surgeons have achieved the highest level of training possible within our field, and have been specifically recruited by the university to provide our region with the latest techniques, surgical innovations and superior patient-centered care,” said Dr. Paul T. Rubery, the Marjorie Strong Wehle Professor of Orthopaedics and Chairman of the Department of Orthopaedics at the University of Rochester.

With eight orthopaedic surgeons, one primary care sports medicine physician and two physician assistants (PAs), the UR Medicine Orthopaedics & Physical Performance team at Thompson has a state-of the-art clinic at 7670 Omnitech Place in Victor. This site also includes an orthopaedic urgent care center, with X-ray services on site.

“In addition, the team is exploring options for its own clinic in Canandaigua, making access to world-class care even easier, close to home,” Stapleton said.

The orthopaedic surgeons specialize in non-surgical and surgical treatment of arthritis in major joints, including total joint replacement; orthopaedic trauma; orthopaedic tumors; primary care sports medicine; hand, shoulder and elbow care; as well as complex foot and ankle care.

To help leverage the expanded breadth of capabilities, Stapleton said, Thompson has invested in a new operating table that enables anterior hip surgeries at Thompson.
Should a patient require surgery, Thompson’s Rehabilitation Services team often begins working with them well before they enter the operating room.

For example, Thompson Health Clinical Coordinator of Physical Therapy Nancy Buerman offers a free education program for those preparing for total hip and knee replacements. Traditionally held in person at the hospital on a monthly basis, the free program is currently taking place online. It addresses questions about preparing for surgery and covers topics including getting the home ready, beginning an exercise program, and more.

In addition, some patients preparing for surgery take advantage of a self-pay aqua therapy program that utilizes the pool at Rehabilitation Services’ Canandaigua location.

According to Director of Rehabilitation Services Carole Drake, her team partners closely with the surgical care team to assure the best recovery plans are in place. Thompson currently offers therapy at three locations - the hospital in Canandaigua, the Thompson Medical Center just off Route 332 in Farmington, and the Omnitech Place Business Park just off Route 96 in Victor. Stapleton noted patient care isn’t the responsibility of any one person.

“Thompson Health takes a multidisciplinary approach, involving experts in all facets of care to bring about the best possible long-term outcomes. From the first appointment to the specialist referral, from the labs to pre-hab therapy, surgery and post-operative recovery, everyone is dedicated to delivering superior, patient-centered care,” he said. “Patients have a
choice where they receive their care. That’s why Thompson is offering more orthopaedic services than ever before.”
