CANANDAIGUA – UR Medicine’s Thompson Hospital recently became the first hospital in New York State to be named a Center of Excellence in Hernia Surgery™ by the independent, non-profit Surgical Review Corporation.
“Thompson demonstrates a strong commitment and ability to consistently deliver safe, effective and evidence-based care. We have a great team of surgeons and associates who work very hard to ensure members of our community who need hernia repair receive a top-notch experience, and we’re excited to know their hard work has been recognized,” said Thompson Health Executive Vice President/COO Kurt Koczent.
During 2016, more than 350 hernia operations were performed at Thompson by four general surgeons, all of whom are board certified and fellows of the American College of Surgeons:
- Dr. A. David Peter of Canandaigua Medical Group
- Dr. Joseph Talarico of Thompson Hospital
- Dr. Paul Whitehead of Canandaigua Surgical Care
- Dr. Thomas Wormer of Canandaigua Medical Group
The designation as a Center of Excellence in Hernia Surgery™ follows an on-site review in December 2016, during which surveyors described Thompson’s commitment to excellence in hernia surgery as “remarkable.”
“Having this outside stamp of approval in recognition of exceeding clinical benchmarks and guidelines is validation for all involved, and lets our patients know they can be confident in the high level of care they will receive here at Thompson,” Koczent said.
