CANANDAIGUA – UR Medicine Thompson Health is partnering with UR Medicine Orthopaedics & Physical Performance for expanded inpatient and outpatient orthopaedic care at F.F. Thompson Hospital.
UR Medicine Orthopaedics & Physical Performance has increased its presence in Canandaigua and Victor, handling all emergency room orthopaedic care at Thompson since Jan. 1 of this year, decreasing unnecessary patient transfers to Rochester. In mid-September its team will increase their presence further, performing surgery at Thompson most days each week. The UR Medicine orthopaedic surgeons are all fellowship-trained, meaning they have undertaken additional training in an orthopaedic sub-specialty after residency, ensuring access to the latest developments in the field.
“These physicians and surgeons have achieved the highest level of training possible within our field, and have been specifically recruited by the university to provide our region with the latest techniques, surgical innovations and superior patient-centered care,” said Dr. Paul T. Rubery, the Marjorie Strong Wehle Professor of Orthopaedics and Chairman of the Department of Orthopaedics at the University of Rochester.
The UR Medicine Orthopaedics & Physical Performance team has an office in Victor, with on-site x-ray as well as on-site rehabilitation services provided by F.F. Thompson Hospital. Advanced imaging and surgeries are performed at Thompson, and a Canandaigua office is planned in the near future.
The surgeons’ specialties include non-surgical and surgical treatment of arthritis in major joints (including total joint replacement); orthopaedic trauma; sports medicine; hand, shoulder and elbow care; as well as complex foot and ankle care. There are eight surgeons, one sports medicine physician and two registered, certified physician assistants. The roster includes Dr. Rishi Balkissoon, Dr. David Ciufo, Dr. John Ginnetti, Dr. Kyle Judd, Dr. Nathan Kaplan, Dr. Susan McDowell, Dr. Peter Obourn, Dr. Marc O’Donnell, Dr. Sandeep Soin, and physician assistants Kevin Bentley and Nicholas Cinquino.
“As one era ends, another begins. I want to thank Canandaigua Orthopaedic Associates for its many years of partnership with Thompson Health. While we were disappointed they ultimately chose to align with a competitor, we are looking ahead. We are excited to collaborate with these top-level orthopaedic professionals from UR Medicine who will enable us to manage the more complex cases right here in Canandaigua,” said Thompson Health President/CEO Michael F. Stapleton, Jr. “I have full confidence in this team to provide all necessary orthopaedic services to our community.”
Stapleton noted that due to the health system’s multi-disciplinary teamwork, F.F. Thompson Hospital has earned Certificates of Distinction in both hip and knee replacement as well as Orthopedic Rehabilitation Certification from The Joint Commission, the nation’s premier healthcare quality improvement and accrediting body. In addition, the hospital is designated by Excellus BlueCross BlueShield as a Blue Distinction® Center+ for Knee and Hip Replacement.
“We have continually demonstrated our commitment to excellence in orthopaedic care to our patients, who are offered a full continuum by our health system,” Stapleton said. “This partnership will take that commitment to the next level at a time when our growing region – with its aging population and its many athletes – needs it more than ever before. Patients can be assessed, diagnosed, undergo surgery and complete their rehabilitation, all with Thompson Health and all under a shared medical record system that allows our teams 360° visibility into our patients’ care.”
