CANANDAIGUA – UR Medicine’s Highland Hospital, the region’s leading provider of bariatric (weight-loss) surgery, will hold a bariatric surgery informational seminar at 6 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 8, at the Constellation Center for Health and Healing in UR Medicine’s Thompson Hospital, 350 Parrish St. in Canandaigua.
William E. O’Malley, M.D., Director of UR Medicine’s Bariatric Surgery Center at Highland Hospital, will host the seminar, providing an overview of the different types of weight-loss surgery available to patients. A bariatric program coordinator will explain the surgical process and the integral role lifestyle and diet changes play in achieving success after weight-loss surgery.

Bariatric surgery is an option for:
• Those who are at least 100 pounds overweight,
• Have a body mass index (BMI) of 40 or more,
• Or have a BMI of 35 or more and are experiencing obesity-related health conditions, such as high blood pressure or diabetes.
In addition to offering informational seminars at Thompson, Highland’s Bariatric Surgery Center allows Finger Lakes and Southern Tier residents who are preparing for bariatric surgery to complete their nutrition counseling sessions and medical testing/lab work at Thompson rather than in Rochester.
