VICTOR – The Spirit of Women program at UR Medicine’s F.F. Thompson Hospital welcomes families to the National Day of Dance® for Your Health event at Eastview Mall on Saturday, Feb. 21, from noon to 4 p.m.
With a theme this year of “Everybody Dance Now,” the Day of Dance is a program of the Spirit of Women Hospital Network and it’s held in 70 communities to improve overall health for women and their families. This is the fifth year that Thompson will participate in this nationwide event to create healthier communities.
“Everybody can benefit by incorporating dance into their exercise routine, so we invite you to join with families in our community by dancing to a variety of music for all generations at Day of Dance,” said Jeanna Savage, director of Thompson’s Spirit of Women program.
The event will include prize drawings and giveaways as well as free demonstrations and lessons for ballroom, belly dancing, salsa, Slide DanceFit/R&B line dancing, Jazzercise, swing/Cajun zydeco, Zumba and square dancing. In addition, free massages and acupuncture will be available from Thompson’s Spirit of Women Body Mind Team. Serving as the event emcee will be former Rochester news anchor Wanda Miller, a certified personal trainer and Zumba instructor.
During Day of Dance, Thompson professionals and representatives of Finger Lakes Cardiology Associates will provide free cholesterol, blood pressure and cardiovascular risk screenings, as well as heart health information. Walk-up appointments are welcome, but Spirit of Women members may make advance appointments for cholesterol screening by calling (585) 396-6111.
Experts note that dancing can help with weight maintenance and weight loss, blood pressure, cholesterol, and even memory skills. It also increases energy, decreases depression, increases coordination and muscle strength, and builds confidence.
“By attending Everybody Dance Now, you will learn and understand your personal risk factors for heart disease and stroke, all while practicing the latest dance moves and spending time with family and friends. Day of Dance is a fun, unique program bringing together doctors, community leaders, media, and businesses to teach families about overall health they can easily incorporate into their daily lives,” said Tanya Abreu, President and Chief Vision Officer of Spirit of Women.
