CANANDAIGUA – The Wellness Department at UR Medicine Thompson Health is seeking volunteers interested in becoming trained to lead Living Healthy program workshops in the community.
Created by the Stanford University Patient Education Research Center, the free Living Healthy program is designed to help people manage chronic conditions, improve their quality of life and lower their healthcare costs. The program is geared toward individuals of all ages, as well as their caregivers, and Thompson began offering its 6-week workshops in 2017.
Volunteers interested in becoming program leaders must:
- Enjoy motivating others in their ability to manage chronic conditions.
- Feel comfortable speaking in front of groups.'
- Agree to adhere to the evidence-based program, which addresses everything from frustration and fatigue, to strength and flexibility, to communication, to healthy eating habits, to problem-solving and decision-making skills, as well as how to maintain a mind-body connection.
- Be able to commit to the time involved in teaching the classes, which meet once a week, for six weeks, with each meeting lasting two and a half hours.
Volunteer program leaders will attend four training sessions, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on May 15, May 17, May 22 and May 24 at the Salvation Army, 110 Saltonstall St. in Canandaigua.
