CANANDAIGUA – UR Medicine’s Thompson Health Cardiac Rehabilitation Department and the New York Wine & Culinary Center (NYWCC) are teaming up to offer a two-part series called “New Approaches for Healthful Eating.”
Led by Clinical Dietitian Darcy Prunoske, RD, CDN, of Thompson, and Chef Jeffory McLean – joined by NYWCC staff – the series will be held at the NYWCC, 800 S. Main St. in Canandaigua.
The series kicks off on Thursday, April 9, with “Get the Most Out of Your Diet!” Held from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m., this first class will help participants become aware of how whole grains can help them meet several dietary goals, as well as why all fats aren’t created equal. Participants in this first class will also take a “virtual shopping tour,” learning how to optimize time and money, decode nutrition labels and feel confident in building a better pantry for creating quick and nutritious meals.
For the second class, “Plant-based Nutrition and Your Health,” participants can choose between two dates: Thursday, April 16, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. or Thursday, April 23, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. This class will cover the most up-to-date research on plant-based diets, plus how they can be incorporated into any lifestyle and play a key role in chronic disease prevention.
The “New Approaches for Healthful Eating” series is being graciously underwritten by Constellation Brands, Jim and Ellie Fralick, the Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT), Thompson’s Spirit of Women program, Wegmans Food Markets and the Yarger family. As a result, those interested in healthful eating can participate for $15 per person per class, instead of the regular retail price of $75 per person, per class. In addition, each class participant will receive a $5 gift certificate to the NYWCC’s restaurant, Upstairs Bistro.
Space is limited. Call (585) 396-6111 to register for classes, with advance payment by cash, check or credit card. Please note that a similar series is planned for May, with the first class offered May 7 and the second offered both May 14 and 21.
