CANANDAIGUA – UR Medicine Thompson Health announces the growth of its specialized wound care services with the expansion of hours by its lead wound care physician Dr. Suzamie Jo Farnsworth. Board-certified in internal medicine, Dr. Farnsworth has nearly 30 years of experience in wound care. She is welcoming new adult patients at F.F. Thompson Hospital’s Marilyn Sands Outpatient Clinic at 395 West St. in Canandaigua.
Wound care is a critical aspect of healthcare, addressing a wide range of conditions which Dr. Farnsworth treats including, diabetic foot ulcers, pressure ulcers, non-healing surgical wounds, traumatic injuries, abscesses, skin tears, hidradenitis, venous ulcers, and arterial ulcers. Specialized wound care can promote healing, prevent complications, and improve the overall quality of life for patients.
At Thompson Health, Dr. Farnsworth utilizes evidence-based clinical practices and state-of-the-art technologies to deliver personalized care. This includes specialized wound dressings, debridement, and other advanced therapies tailored to each patient’s unique needs.
“Proper wound care is critical to the healing process; it can shorten the time to heal, decrease the possibility of infection, and decrease pain,” Dr. Farnsworth said. “Understanding why a wound won’t heal and utilizing an evidence-based approach to initiate the correct intervention is crucial to accelerate healing, reduce pain, and improve the patient’s overall well-being.”
Donna Maloney of Victor was a recent patient of Dr. Farnsworth. After breast cancer and subsequent radiation treatments, Maloney developed a wound in her armpit that would not heal. She was referred to the hospital’s specialized wound care team. Through a variety of treatments, Dr. Farnsworth was able to heal the wound and provide Maloney a better range of motion, a sense of normalcy, and a more enjoyable life.
“Dr. Farnsworth’s treatment was a true lifesaver,” said Maloney. “My wound healed nicely and I was able to get back to my normal routine; it really made a difference in my recovery and in my happiness.”
While focused on wound care, Dr. Farnsworth emphasizes education and early detection of infection to avoid hospitalization or surgery. She stresses that untreated or improperly managed wounds can be particularly dangerous for patients with underlying health conditions such as diabetes. Dr. Farnsworth encourages smoking cessation, blood pressure control, proper diet, edema control, and improved diabetes control for her patients to avoid complications, including amputation. This, along with the right treatment, can help stimulate the body’s natural healing process and accelerate the closure of wounds.
“My team and I are committed to providing our Finger Lakes community with the highest quality of wound care,” Dr. Farnsworth said. “By expanding our services and investing in the latest technologies, we are able to deliver exceptional outcomes and improve the quality of life for our patients.”
