CANANDAIGUA – Three local high school seniors who are about to pursue degrees in healthcare-related fields each received $2,000 scholarships from the Thompson Health Guild recently.
The scholarships were presented at the Guild’s annual dinner, held at Ferris Hills at West Lake on June 10, with Ferris Hills/Clark Meadows Executive Director Lloyd Theiss as the keynote speaker.
The Phyllis Ehmann Memorial Scholarship and the Terry Tremblay Memorial Scholarship have been awarded annually for several years. New this year was a third, $2,000 gift – the Deborah L. Kimble Memorial Scholarship. This new scholarship will be given annually to a student pursuing a degree in nursing or pediatric care.
“The Guild extends a heartfelt thank you to the family of Russ Kimble for the generous donation to fund this third scholarship in memory of his wife, Debbie,” said Krista Jackson, vice president of the Guild.
This year’s recipients were as follows:
• Phyllis Ehmann Scholarship: Stephen D. Carro of Canandaigua Academy will pursue a degree in chemistry at University of Buffalo and plans to pursue a career in medical research.
• Terry Tremblay Scholarship: Emily Young of Canandaigua Academy will pursue a “3+3” program with SUNY Geneseo and Upstate Medical University in Syracuse, for a doctorate in physical therapy.
• Deborah L. Kimble Scholarship: Mary Kathryn C. Riesenberger of Naples Central School will attend Elmira College to pursue a BSN degree in nursing.
A not-for-profit fundraising organization, the Thompson Health Guild was established in 1905 by the F.F. Thompson Hospital Board of Directors, for the purpose of raising funds to purchase needed medical equipment and furnishings for the hospital. Today, the Guild has more than 200 members and is governed by a volunteer board of directors as it supports the entire Thompson Health system.
