CANANDAIGUA – UR Medicine Thompson Health is marking National Lymphedema Awareness Day on Tuesday, March 6, by hosting a celebration/educational opportunity for the community.
Lymphedema is a protein-rich swelling in the superficial tissues of the body. This condition most commonly occurs in the arms and legs, but can also accumulate in the face, neck, abdomen and genitalia. Lymphedema occurs when the lymphatic system is impaired and unable to move these swellings through the appropriate channels and filter them back into the venous system.
Thompson’s March 6 event will be held from 5 to 6 p.m. in the Associate Conference Room on the ground floor of the Constellation Center for Health and Healing at Thompson Hospital, 350 Parrish St.
On hand to answer questions will be Occupational Therapists Angela Kiklowicz and Certified Occupational Therapy Assistant Dawn DeFisher. Kiklowicz is certified in Complete Decongestive Therapy for the treatment of lymphedema and other chronic swelling disorders as well as hand/upper extremity rehabilitation. She is also a licensed massage therapist.
The two will also offer light refreshments, educational handouts and door prizes.
For more information about the celebration or to find out more about lymphedema services at Thompson, including the support group Kiklowicz hosts, call (585) 396-6050.
