Thompson Health welcomes the community to “get their dance on” – along with over 75 other hospitals across the U.S. – to the National Day of Dance for Heart Health event. Thompson’s annual Day of Dance will take place on February 9, 2013 in Victor, New York at Eastview Mall’s Main Court from noon to 4 p.m. Day of Dance celebrates women taking action for good heart health by providing heart healthy information and by promoting exercise through dance.
Local dance and exercise experts will provide a variety of free dance lessons and demonstrations, including Ballroom, Jazzercise, Swing, Zumba, Slide Dancefit/R&B Line Dancing and more. There will be free drawings, including gift baskets from Thompson’s partners in health like Wegmans, Oliver’s Oils, Sweet Expression, Eric’s Office and many more.
Thompson’s Spirit of Women program focuses on dance as a way to take steps for a healthier life because dancing can burn as many calories as swimming, walking or riding a bike (as many as 200-400 calories per hour). Many health benefits may result from dance if it is done on a regular basis as a form of exercise. Benefits include weight maintenance or weight loss, blood pressure and cholesterol management (lowering), increased energy, decreased sadness and depression, increased coordination and muscle strength, and an overall sense of well-being. Coronary heart disease, which causes heart attack, is the single leading cause of death for American men and women. Day of Dance also educates consumers on a variety of cardiovascular conditions such as atrial fibrillation, stroke and more.
With free cholesterol testing, blood pressure testing and interactive wellness booths, experts from Thompson’s cardio-pulmonary team and many other departments will provide screenings and heart healthy information to help women and their families reduce heart disease risk factors. Medical experts from the University of Rochester Medical Center’s Finger Lakes Cardiology Associates will be available to review the results of screenings, evaluate cardiovascular risks and answer heart healthy questions. Thompson’s “Queen of Hearts” will also be at the event to educate the community about echocardiogram tests.
“This event is a great way for Thompson to reach out to the community and share heart healthy information,” says Thompson’s Director of Spirit of Women. “It also gives Thompson an opportunity to highlight its programs and services available in the Victor area including our new Lab Draw Station, Urgent Care Center, HealthWorks occupational medicine for businesses, and our Family Practice physicians located in Victor.”
