CANANDAIGUA – The results of the American Heart Association 2018 Workplace Health Achievement Index were announced recently and UR Medicine Thompson Health achieved Gold-level recognition for taking significant steps to build a culture of health in the workplace.
With more than 1,700 employees, Thompson is based in Ontario County but has locations in three surrounding counties – Monroe, Livingston and Wayne. In addition to a 113-bed hospital, the health system includes a 178-bed skilled-nursing facility with an off-site medical adult day program, two urgent care sites, a breast imaging center, a sleep disorders center, independent and enriched living communities for seniors, 10 primary care practices and eight lab draw stations.
The health system has a robust employee wellness program and has previously received four Wealth of Health Awards from the Rochester Business Journal and Excellus BlueCross/Blue Shield for its initiatives. These include biometric screenings for employees and spouses, on-site exercise classes, a fitness center that is free for employees and volunteers to use, healthy vending machines and on-site classes for managing health conditions.
This marks the first time Thompson has achieved Gold-level recognition on the Workplace Health Achievement Index.
“Thompson Health works very hard to offer our associates a number of opportunities to improve their health, so achieving Gold-level recognition is something we’re very proud of,” said Vice President of Associate Services/Wellness Jennifer DeVault. “We are one of the area’s largest employers and this achievement lets potential hires know we are fully committed to their well-being and have demonstrated this commitment in such a way that an outside organization ranks our internal wellness offerings as among the very best.”
The American Heart Association created the Index with its CEO Roundtable members, a leadership collaborative of more than 40 CEOs from some of America’s largest companies who are committed to applying evidence-based approaches to improve their employees’ overall health. The Index uses science-based best practices to evaluate the overall quality and comprehensiveness of their workplace health programs. A unique feature of the Index is that it calculates an average heart health score for employees of participating companies that securely submit aggregate health data.
Companies receive benchmarking reports, which allow them to identify potential areas of improvement so that they can advance their annual performance and recognition in the Index and help their workforce move toward ideal heart health.
