Breast Cancer Surgery

Thompson Health Advanced Surgical Services and UR Medicine Plastic Surgery are teamed up to provide a comprehensive breast cancer surgery program for the benefit of breast cancer patients in the Finger Lakes area.

With the goal of streamlining treatment following a breast cancer diagnosis, local patients having their breast surgery at Thompson will not need to go to Rochester for a second, reconstructive surgery with a plastic surgeon. Instead, the reconstructive surgery can begin immediately after the lumpectomy or mastectomy, so everything can be taken care of in one surgical experience. This can mean less anesthesia, less surgery preparation and recovery time, and a quicker start to the next stage of treatment.

Pre-surgery appointments will be streamlined under this new program, as well, wherever possible, allowing for one trip to the hospital instead of multiple.

In your meeting with your cancer surgeon and breast reconstruction surgeon, we will review the methods that are right for the kind of mastectomy you will receive. It’s important to note that, in some cases, breast reconstruction surgery will need to wait until you have healed. All of these discussions will happen in your pre-surgery appointments to be sure you understand your individualized treatment plan.

The Breast Cancer Surgery Program partnership is coordinated by the nurse navigation team from Thompson’s Breast Imaging Center in Canandaigua.
